This book is Chopper's redemption. It is the real story of the man, the criminal and the prisoner, told with black humour and surprising insight. "This book is about my journey through the Australian prison system. You'll have heard a few of these stories before, but not like this. It's a step-by-step history of my twenty three years behind bars; what day to day life was really like in jail, what I did to survive and why I'll never go back. It's not a nice story. I was not a nice prisoner...Mark "Chopper" Read is over 50 years old and has spent almost half that time in prison. He is a man who knows the Australian prison system better than any other. He knows how the definitive school of hard knocks turns juvenile delinquents into hardened criminals. How it feels to be thrust into a world of violent psychopaths and be changed, irrevocably, into the worst of their number. He also knows how it feels to pull out a man's colostomy bag (like a rope going through a barbed-wire fence). How it feels to lose your ears to a prison-issue razor blade (a gurgling sound like a little brook). How it feels to fight, maim and mutilate to stay alive. And what it means when that way of life no longer makes sense.

Anyone that likes this kind of book will enjoy this collection of tales.
Every other Chopper book.
Obviously, its got to be Chopper himself. Anyone that has heard/read anything about Chop Chop before will have a good idea of what to expect. An almost lovable rogue with a warped and twisted idea of morals.
I enjoyed listening to a chapter or two each day. Not sure I would have been able to maintain interest to do the whole thing in one go as it was slightly repetitive but I guess thats how it actually was, with Chopper going from one violent event to another.
Overall I enjoyed the narrator but at times he sounded a little bored. I think sometimes he also mistook a comma for a full stop when reading out loud but there were more positives about the performance than negatives. I thought he captured the humour and delivered it in a way that I would expect from watching a few interviews with Chopper and the film about him. There were quite a few laugh out loud moments.
If gritty prison reality is your thing then this book will be right up your street. However, if you are at all squeemish or of a more gentle disposition then steer clear. The casual way extreme acts of violence are portrayed is quite disturbing. Such descriptions usually dont affect me but i found i had to be in the 'right mood' shall we say to listen to this one. Listener beware !
So good! What a loveable psycho! I loved this book, right up my street, hopefully audibile will get Choppers other books online soon.
RIP Chop Chop
I enjoyed this book and also the narrator did a marvellous job. It was violent in some places, but overall it kept me listening to the end to find out how thngs unfolded.
I would like to hear more stories of this type.
"Classic Chopper - I didnt want the story to end"
My only criticism is that it was not long enough. I could have listened for another 20+ hours. His life story fascinates me. I have read all his books and watched the movie and have not been disappointed once. The book gives the reader a glimse into prison life that should be enough deterrent for anyone contemplating a life of crime. Although brutal at times, there are some stories that had me laughing out loud at Chopper's retelling of the event. It is short at just over 5 hours, but absorbing from beginning to end. If you enjoy this subject matter, this is a must listen!
"Road to nowhere"
I liked the anecdotes. I disliked the rediculous accounts of beatings where the victims take the beatings like a super hero.
Not a bad read. Can't really relate to a morally bankrupt criminal
