Audible Editor Reviews

Russell Brand is unstoppable in his best-selling and hilariously funny new release audiobook, Revolution, where he writes and narrates his way towards political change and action. In complete and unabridged audio, Brand divulges of corrupt governments, lies and slander within modern politics and calls his listeners to action. He has devised a plan for an alluring society he wants everyone to enjoy, have fun in and live life to the fullest. The characteristic humour we all know so well makes this listen entertaining as much as it is revealing. Available now from Audible.

Publisher's Summary

Russell Brand wants YOU to join the revolution.

We all know the system isn't working. Our governments are corrupt and the opposing parties pointlessly similar. Our culture is filled with vacuity and pap, and we are told there's nothing we can do - "it's just the way things are".

In this book, Russell Brand hilariously lacerates the straw men and paper tigers of our conformist times and presents, with the help of experts as diverse as Thomas Piketty and George Orwell, a vision for a fairer, sexier society that's fun and inclusive.

You have been lied to, told there's no alternative, no choice and that you don't deserve any better. Brand destroys this illusory facade as amusingly and deftly as he annihilates Morning Joe anchors, Fox News fascists and BBC stalwarts.

This book makes revolution not only possible, but inevitable and fun.

"It does your head in - in a good way, sort of!!!"
What did you like about this audiobook?

Yes, but I'm not sure what I took from it that I didn't already feel deep inside. Did it confirm my thoughts of the world in which we live as pawns in a game of corporate chess? YES. Did it inspire me to join the Revolution? Hmmm. Russell is a committed individual to this cause, but he's not the first nor the last whose words inspire if only for a short period. People are sheep and they need leaders to turn words in to action to motivate them to follow.

Russell wants us to abandon the political options (non options) available to us and make a statement of none compliance. Starting by not voting. I can see that as an viable option, which is a statement in itself if it is viewed as a vote of no confidence as opposed to apathy. However, we need a cause and a person to follow to make it real e.g. Some one like Seattle City Councillor Kshama Sawant who led an election victory centred on her campaign that raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour minimum. We can't Russell all do this on our own, community needs leaders to affect meaningful change. Someone with the right principles on show, and action that delivers them will get my backing and yes even my vote.

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

Yes. He's informative, motivational and entertaining in one package. And, more than anything is genuine.

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

Yes. He's informative, motivational and entertaining in one package. And, more than anything is genuine.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

I haven't but I imagine Revolution is not like anything he's written previously. The message is clearly made. Sad to say I cannot see the political landscape changing any time soon and Russell's words will be as relevant in ten years as they are today.

Do you have any additional comments?

I haven't felt this passionate about the social fabric of our world since I was a CND member in the 1970s. Thanks for reawakening my true self. I wish him well.

Would you consider the audio edition of Revolution to be better than the print version?

i would imagine so, given that russell himself is reading it!?

What was one of the most memorable moments of Revolution?

despite the fact that i have been deeply interested in politics all my life, it was his inclusion and description of the vast amounts of money that 0.01% of the population have that really made me realize that we live in a masked dictatorship purely for their benefit.

What about Russell Brand’s performance did you like?

it was his voice, he speaks with a slightly forced eloquence and tendency to lapse into poetry, but i think that is quite unique and creative.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

it made me laugh at times, it confirmed just how bad this planet is. it made me consider more spiritual endeavors, such as meditation.

    Any additional comments?

because he attacks the system of psychopathic nihilism, and by extension the media that facilitates this, he has been hit with a counter attack by the media, claiming his book is bad, and that he is bad for writing it. they claim that he is just profiteering from espousing social commentary, but he donates all the profit from this book to charity. ultimately i think that what this books confirms is that there is a psychopathic elite who have almost omnipotent power over this planet and have no intention of giving that up, or of preventing it's destruction and the intense suffering of everyone else. brand provides countless alternate systems of governance, but doesn't really address how we the people could get into a situation where we can make these changes. this is because it is practically impossible. the rich hold all the keys and whenever change appears possible they swoop down and extinguish it. this probably means that the planet or at least 'civilization' will be destroyed in the next 50 or so years. however this book does provide solutions to our personal problems via meditation etc, and what is more, if this book reaches the minds of people who didn't already know most of the information as i did, then it should wake them up to the truth, which is a good thing. also, he is putting his head above the parapet and at least trying, which is commendable. i would recommend this book for anyone who doesn't know what is going on in the world re psychopathic governance due to the brainwashing of the media, and if anyone who already knows this wants to read it then fair enough.

    Any additional comments?

I read this book on two long bus journeys across Cuba. It was a fascinating time for me and I feel now more than ever how important many of Russell's points are. Especially when I arrived into Peru to be greeted by glaring consumerist billboards (after nothing but Revolutionary slogans in Cuba). I felt a shudder for humanity when I heard about 'Black Friday' back home in Blighty! Good on ya Russ, many things I've been ranting on at mates about, succinctly collected into a great book with some excellent contributions from great thinkers. Let's mobilise!

If you could sum up Revolution in three words, what would they be?

    Gripping, daring, funny,

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character was Brand the competent storyteller, he has a sad, funny and interesting story to tell.

Which character – as performed by Russell Brand – was your favourite?

Mr. Churchill and Mr. Tolle, just to mention a few .

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh many times but it also made me feel sad because it basically tells the truth.

    Any additional comments?

I bought this book by chance, it popped up on the front-page of Audible. Normally I prefer detective novels or writers like Pat Conroy or Karen Blixen so this type of book is new to me.
Anyhow I am really glad I bought it because it is worth every penny and worth every minute spend listening.

Would you consider the audio edition of Revolution to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the book but the audio delivery is a little uneven, in Russell Brand's inimitable style. Listening to him articulate the arguments is probably better.

Would you listen to Revolution again? Why?

Unhappy? Read this. If you still can't work it out then give up, order another pizza and watch XFactor.

What other book might you compare Revolution to, and why?

    "The Way" by Edward Goldsmith

What about Russell Brand’s performance did you like?

Russell breaks down some very difficult concepts about globalisation and capitalism straight from other great writers and thinkers, like Naom Chomsky, Helena Norberg-Hodge ...and 'Dave,' and makes their theories easy for beginners. Most importantly, he makes it funny.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes.

    Any additional comments?

Should be compulsory reading in schools.

What did you like most about Revolution?

Great listen, most honest thing you can listen to.

What does Russell Brand bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

His flare with wordplay, it felt poetic in some parts.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    All as good

    Any additional comments?

One of the best books you can buy. Although I did listen on the free trial.

    What disappointed you about Revolution?

I'm sad to say that I threw the towel in at chapter 7. Very minor story line thus far and I found it hard work.

What will your next listen be?

    Something alot lighter and slower!

What aspect of Russell Brand’s performance might you have changed?

The speed of the narration is massively fast.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

..... Some funny quips but they were few and far between.

    Any additional comments?

I love russell brand. I do. I love what he stands for and the view he has one life. From an audio book viewpoint I felt utterly exhausted and positively abused by the ramblings of a very tormented fellow essex man.

What would have made Revolution better?

I've found the best pre workout ever. Russell Brand's revolution as read by the other. What a tosser

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

He has that annoying trait of filling a sentence with as many words as possible, whilst simultaneously conveying the least amount of information. I don't know if he thinks it makes him sound clever or if he's got a minimum word clause in this book

    Any additional comments?

The book should be called I've met a load of hippies, socialists and so called anarchists at mixers since I became famous and here's what they've told me to think.

Can't see the world in the same way after reading this. Stirred up a dormant desire to see a better world and points to where that can start. I've avoided books like this for fear that once the inner working of democracy are revealed I'll feel helpless. But after reading this I feel quite the opposite.

"Russel's name is the only selling point"
What would have made Revolution better?

The tone of the whole book seemed condescending yet simple at the same time. I'm a fan of Russel Brand and the new direction his career is taking (the Trews is my breakfast watching) and I agree with a number of his viewpoints. However this book to me felt like an overly long, rambling edition of the trews that lacked his normal energy and humor. Overall I felt it was worse written than an average episode of the Trews. The tone of the whole book felt more like a high school child's first attempt at political/philosophical writing.

Has Revolution turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. I think that this book was not the best example of Russel's work. Rather than listen to this, watch all of the Trews back to back. To be honest my opinion on this book may have been higher had I not known Russel's potential. It felt like a first attempt and I'm definitely looking forward to his second

    Which scene was your favorite?

It was a rambling philosophical brick wall spiced with the occasional anecdote. Nothing was really memorable aside from the time I accidentally sped up the playback (and decided it was an improvement)

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Revolution?

The entire premise of the book needs a re-working which I hope he is doing. Nothing at all stood out in this book. It was just Russel rambling about leftist politics for almost 10 hours. All of it would be equally worthy of removal.

    Any additional comments?

If you have a vendetta against youtube and refuse to watch Russel's show "The Trews" yet you are still intrigued by his politics then this is for you. However it really seemed to me that a lot of this book was written before Russel learned how to arrange an argument and talk about politics from his youtube channel. My opinion may have been different were I not a long time watcher of the Trews as he does espouse some refreshing ideas. However the similarities to his show are great and the show is by far the stronger of the two and by now there is very little in this book that he has not talked about (in a better way) on the trews.

    Excellent reading though.
