Publisher's Summary

One of the most accomplished and outspoken actors today chronicles the highs and lows of his life in this beautifully written, candid memoir.

Over the past three decades, Alec Baldwin has established himself as one of Hollywood's most gifted, hilarious, and controversial leading men. From his work in popular movies, including Beetlejuice, Working Girl, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Cooler, and Martin Scorsese's The Departed to his role as Jack Donaghy on Tina Fey's irreverent series 30 Rock - for which he won two Emmys, three Golden Globes, and seven Screen Actors Guild Awards - and as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live, he's both a household name and a deeply respected actor.

In Nevertheless, Baldwin transcends his public persona, making public facets of his life he has long kept private. In this honest, affecting memoir, he introduces us to the Long Island child who felt burdened by his family's financial strains and his parents' unhappy marriage; the Washington, DC, college student gearing up for a career in politics; the self-named "Love Taxi" who helped friends solve their romantic problems while neglecting his own; the young soap actor learning from giants of the theatre; the addict drawn to drugs and alcohol who struggles with sobriety; the husband and father who acknowledges his failings and battles to overcome them; and the consummate professional for whom the work is everything. Throughout Nevertheless, one constant emerges: the fearlessness that defines and drives Baldwin's life.

Told with his signature candor, astute observational savvy, and devastating wit, Nevertheless reveals an Alec Baldwin we have never fully seen before.

    "Excellent Memoirs"

I loved this book written by the actor Alec Baldwin. It was particularly candid and powerful. His delivery is the best I've heard since Nick Offerman. Undoubtedly the best sounding voice in show business. Definitely well worth a listen.

    "Who knew Alec could write?"

I saw Alec Baldwin on a morning talk show discussing his book. I'm not a huge fan, but I thought I would give it a try. I'm glad I did! Wow, I had no idea that Alec Baldwin had such a talent for writing. This is a beautifully written memoir. I was hooked from the first sentence and binge-listened through the weekend.

Baldwin's narration gives his story an intimate feel, like you're his new best friend who he's sharing his life story and secrets with. I also have some new respect for this actor, who I had categorized as an arrogant hot head based on tabloid reports. There's some real substance behind the sandy voice and wicked grin.

Really fascinating. It's true we only get to know the surface persona usually via TMZ nightmares. You are clearly well versed in your occupation. You're a great actor. Wonderful writer and philanthropist. You are intensely knowledgeable in many forms. Again it's nice to have met you. Great book. PS yes I love your Trump and your bill O'Reilly is hysterical.

    "Nevertheless: A Memoir"

I was hooked on the first sentence. This is an insightful, melancholy story of this actor.I could not stop listening. His Memories of movies is remarkable. He, like my brother and I used to stretch out on front of TV, laying on our stomachs chins in our hands, watching, Bogart, Cagney, John Wayne. Maybe the lives of introverted, lonely kids need to be filled with other lives. He had a list of books. I read it and kept saying "Yes". I would be remiss if I did not mention Baldwin's soft, and husky Voice. It, the voice and the story are hypnotic. Treat yourself.

    "An extremely entertaining life story"

Alec's book is a thoughtful and passionate as the man himself. From his working class upbringing on Long Island to his artistic endeavors with the likes of Anthony Hopkins and more recently parodying Donald Trump, Alec tells these great stories in detail without pulling punches. Treat yourself to this book.

    "Preachy, Mediocre Effort by Alec"
What would have made Nevertheless better?

Although Baldwin attempts to portray himself as "opening up" about his life and career, I can't help but feel most of the time he's simply slanting the stories in his favor and using his wonderful narration skills to sell it. The book starts off entertaining enough through the first few chapters until it hits a political brick wall in Chapters 16 and 17 colored by his TDS. Nothing you can't get from watching any five minutes of MSNBC. Thankfully, Audible makes it easy to fast-forward. The book also lacks any juicy details of the money he earned from acting gigs and any good stories about his siblings. Sadly, it's a one-time listen and immediate delete.

Would you be willing to try another book from Alec Baldwin? Why or why not?

I find Alec Baldwin an interesting figure and love much of his screen work. I would give his other work a chance.

    "Exquisitely Compassionate and Honest"
What did you love best about Nevertheless?

I originally purchased this book (off cycle too, no credits!) because I wanted to thank Mr. Baldwin for leading the resistance against the corruption in the White House. I honestly didn't expect too much, but I wanted to acknowledge him. To my complete surprise and pleasure, I have found the cadence of his narrative, and most importantly, the honesty and compassion that weaves this memoir to be truly captivating. I'm listening for a second time today, in fact.

What did you like best about this story?

This is a story of such similarity to my own (he on Long Island, me in western New York on *Grand Island) that I found myself grinning and eager to hear more. The descriptive details took me back to the snowy, inventive, working class fun we had as children, playing outside until darkness forced us in, no matter the temperature. Kickball, snowball fights, sneaking cigs in the open fields that surrounded our family-saturated neighborhoods...this all came back as I listened, enraptured by the honor the author pays to our simple past. Mr. Baldwin's mid-century Irish-Catholic experience should speak to all who were there, somewhere-anywhere across America, raised in a chaotic crowd and somehow feeling responsibility to share the burden of our dutiful yet over-burdened parents. Ugh. I'm right there now, as he was during the writing of this work.

What does Alec Baldwin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It's Alec! As he says, his life has largely been lived in public. I have wondered about his character from time to time, thinking perhaps he was arrogant or self-entitled. Quite the contrary; I hear in both his intonation and the steady truth he shares someone who learned through this writing who he is, and... who he is...is good. If he's good, and his childhood was so very similar to my own, then I must be good. We are, in other words, simpatico. Dig that. It's rare to find that sort of common ground these days. Thanks for the memories....as Carol Burnett might say while tugging an earlobe.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

A son honoring his parents' memory while also speaking plainly about the unavoidable pain that comes from family relations strained by poverty and loss is, quite simply, poetic. I was particularly moved by Baldwin's description of learning through therapy and a bit of research, (as I have done--and very likely many other of his readers), to understand his mother and father's life in context. To do so, and then to admit that it was necessary, is palpably kind and humble. I want to listen to that narrator. That's a narrator I can trust. The vivid details of his father's intellectual gifts undervalued, of the loss of his father's parents' guidance so abruptly and tragically, of his father's early death from burdens that wore him down inspire empathy within the listener, as an exquisitely good memoir will do.

    Any additional comments?

Bravo, Mr. Baldwin. Keep pursuing good over bad, keep resisting the takeover of our democracy by fascists, and ....write some more....you've got it (and this is something I know).

"Big fan of Alec Baldwin, but book disappointed"
    Any additional comments?

I'm a big fan of Alec Baldwin. He was hilarious on "30 Rock," he brings fun and humor to many of the movies he's in and he makes a great Trump on "SNL." More importantly, I feel like I've gotten to know him through his "Here's the Thing" podcast where he is gregarious and such a hospitable host. Unfortunately, none of these traits were present in this book. The first half of the book was quite boring, and the second half -- once he gets started in Hollywood -- is bitter. Most of what we here about is all the grudges he still holds. I feel like it's a book written by Alec Baldwin, circa 2005, instead of the more mature Baldwin of 2017.
