Dame Stephanie Shirley is one of Britain's leading philanthropists and has donated most of her life to helping good causes, especially those close to her heart.
This fascinating memoir, read by Dame Stephanie herself charts her life from her time as a child in Germany and arrival in England as an unaccompanied Kindertransport refugee through to her retirement and dedication to charity.
This amazing audiobook will take you through the entire range of emotions - from happiness at the success of her original company Freelance Programmers through to the ultimate sadness of losing her only child.

The candidness of what life really looks like, and the struggle behind reaching your goals.
I'm listening to the book a second time. Its a book I want to listen to slowly to catch every sentence.
It is easy to forget how far we have come as a society, both in dealing with women's issues and in how we care for individuals with disabilities. Shirley describes her journey through both as a female entrepreneur and parent of a child with severe autism. She is surprisingly transparent about her experiences. That level of honesty is quite captivating.
The beginning of the story was gripping, as Shirley described her early life as a child as a member of the Kindertransport program and the rejection by her mother, as well as the starting of her business.
As the book went on, it became slightly long and main themes were repeated over an over. Although I understood Shirley's feelings of betrayal by some of her colleagues, it made for a less interesting and inspiring experience as the story went on. It could have done with a little bit more editing, as there were clearly times where she re-read sentences of the book because of a fumble, and the duplicates should have been edited out but were somehow missed.
"To a women worth listening to!!!"
I first saw Steve on Ted Talk. She was funny in her own way, you had to listen a few times to get to know her. She said it like is it, very open with her thoughts and feelings. Listening to her audio book was wonderful!! Love her commanding voice, captured me right away. Her soft side was always there and I respected her for that. For the love of her son was greatly put to words and emotions. I have lost children and she captured that feeling and numbness, that can only felt by parents of lost children Very exciting story of her rise in the corporate world. This lady does not take no for a answer!!!
Reading this book makes me dream of going back four decades or so and getting and wanting a education
Thanks for the wonderful audio, loved every second of it and will being listening over and over again. I always miss something the first time and gain the wisdom on each and every listen
"Amazing life, unedited audio book"
Shirley's incredible story
- Surviving Nazi occupation
- Women in tech
- Women in business
- Parenting a child with severe autism
And all of the struggles and successes that have gone with each.
Dame Shirley is telling her story, and does so pleasantly.
This book was pretty heavy emotionally speaking and had a lot of detail, and therefore I need some breaks. It was great for my daily commute.
FYI: It's not edited. One whole chapter is repeated. It's not even that distracting when she has to go back and read something again, but it's not ideal.
"Really worthwhile book to listen to!"
Great story coupled with wisdom and heartwarming trials. Amazing woman role model! I will am inspired by her courage and level-headedness.
