Summary

Everyone thinks they know the real Gordon Ramsay: rude, loud, pathologically driven, stubborn as hell. But this is his real story…

This is Gordon Ramsay’s autobiography – the first time he has told the full story of how he became the world’s most famous and infamous chef: his difficult childhood, his brother’s heroin addiction and his failed first career as a footballer: all of these things have made him the celebrated culinary talent and media powerhouse that he is today. Gordon talks frankly about:

  • his tough childhood: his father’s alcoholism and violence and the effects on his relationships with his mother and siblings
  • his first career as a footballer: how the whole family moved to Scotland when he was signed by Glasgow Rangers at the age of fifteen, and how he coped when his career was over due to injury just three years later
  • his brother’s heroin addiction.
  • Gordon’s early career: learning his trade in Paris and London; how his career developed from there: his time in Paris under Albert Roux and his seven Michelin-starred restaurants.
  • kitchen life: Gordon spills the beans about life behind the kitchen door, and how a restaurant kitchen is run in Anthony Bourdain-style.
  • and how he copes with the impact of fame on himself and his family: his television career, the rapacious tabloids, and his own drive for success.

Humble Pie - Wow!

This was my first choice on Audible. I thought it may be interesting and give an insight into a well known man. I was very surprised by the book. It is extremely well written and Gordon narrates well, there are moments when you can hear the emotion in his voice.

This book has given me a very different view of Gordon Ramsay. I actually thought he was loud, rude and insensitive. I was very wrong. This book not only details his childhood and his career, it gives a real feel for what makes him tick and how he has become the man he is.

I would thoroughly recommend it. I listened to it in one session and played it again later.

Eat It

Told in the familiar tones of the Ramsey we all know, I found myself looking forward to listening to this on the commute to and from work. It gives a good insight into Ramsey's difficult upbringing, his 'near miss' of playing with Rangers, his early career and the fishbowl that is the London restaurant scene. I felt he was pretty honest about his influences, good and bad, his lucky breaks and his dedication to perfection that drives himself almost to distraction. In the end, you come away thinking that for all the money and fame, he's chosen a life that's never going to be an easy ride.

Fantastic, shame it's abridged!

I'm a big Ramsay fan and really enjoyed hearing his story. Seriously inspiring guy, just shows life is really all about hard work. I just wish they'd have made an unabridged version, however as the book illustrates, he's a busy man!

Yes, chef, I like it.

This is a great story, brilliantly well told and narrated by Gordon himself. His breathy, chatty style is just right for the content. The first f...... h... comes as a bit of a shock (I kept expecting him to be bleeped!) but it is no holds barred as he describes his tough childhood and rise to the top. Skulduggery and backstabbing in the kitchen and his views on other chefs provide laughs, but his total passion for food, and, indeed, life comes over clearly. Humble he ain't, but obviously very proud of what he has achieved, and quite right too. Very inspiring.

Gordon is very Humble !

"I finished this audiobook in a day while walking around my town. It's a gentle side of Gordon, talking about his life and his family. You will get to learn about his family and his humble beginnings. No plot spoilers, just listen to the story and see what I mean. I'm not saying anymore. 10/10."
