Issu d'un univers sépharade aujourd'hui totalement disparu, c'est en 1971 à la disparition de son frère Georges, qu'Elias Canetti - Prix Nobel de Littérature en 1981 - entreprend d'écrire le récit de sa vie et des personnages qui ont marqué son enfance, à commencer par sa mère, Mathilde Arditi. Pierre Arditi, comédien et petit cousin de l'auteur, restitue ce lien familial à travers des textes choisis au fil d'Histoire d'une jeunesse, Histoire d'une vie et Les voix de Marrakech.
