Summary
Shocking, funny and unflinchingly honest, Emergency Admissions gives us a fascinating glimpse into the extraordinary world of ambulance driving from the man behind the wheel.
Kit Wharton has been an ambulance driver for a dozen years. This book is his report from the frontline of that work: 999 calls that hurtle him to critical moments in other peoples' lives. Nothing in this job is normal; every job is different. From the bizarre to the terrifying and tragic, Wharton takes his audience through his strange work.
There is an S&M party gone horribly wrong and bodily discharges sure to make you wretch. There is a man who calls 999 saying he has picked a spot - you can imagine Kit's irritation. When he arrives, the patient is lying in a pool of his own blood. On the other hand, there are colossal time wasters. There are extraordinarily sad stories, heartwarming, touching instances of human bravery and connection.
Along the way Kit reveals more about his own unconventional upbringing, a childhood pickled in alcohol abuse and bohemian family setups. As he says, he was well prepared for the ambulance service....

Uninteresting and Not Funny At All
It's not funny it's not even interesting, apart from one or two stories I've heard them all before even experienced some myself and I have funnier experiences than the ones in this audio book and I only worked in a nursing home which half where dementia patient's. Was very unimpressed.

Engaging
A mixture of stories from the front line of the ambulance service and of an 'interesting' childhood. Enjoyed it and would like to read more about the writer's life. I found the wry tone of the narration a bit monotonous.

Excellent
One of the best books I've listened to on Audible. In places laugh out loud hilarious and all through well written and performed, it's an amazing window on the sides of a job you don't see.

Not for the faint hearted
this book definitely isn't for the faint hearted, it goes into some pretty gory details. There were points where I laughed out loud with some of the stories he tells and some you can't believe really happened. If you want a real insight into the Uk ambulance service this is a good book to have.

Interesting
This book is an interesting compilation of some of the more bizarre ambulance tasks and it also shows how life as an ambulance technician and home can intertwine. The reflections about his childhood give a depth to the book. It produces many emotions from humour to sadness, from times of joy to times of pain. A memorable read

Moaning and judgemental
It’s more of an opportunity for the author to complain about his upbringing than stories from the emergency service. The fourth time the phrase ‘lunatic asylum’ was used, I’d had enough... Imagine being a fully grown woman in your career in the police, for this patronising author to call you a ‘police girl’. Either no one read this book before it was published or they really wanted to show how judgemental he is. Like overhearing a drunk bloke moan about his life/job.

Superb! Honest and compelling.
Great insight into the daily life, working for the emergency service at the same time learning about the author and his upbringing, thoroughly enjoyed this book.
