South African-born Elon Musk is the renowned entrepreneur and innovator behind PayPal, SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity. Musk wants to save our planet; he wants to send citizens into space, to form a colony on Mars; he wants to make money while doing these things; and he wants us all to know about it.
He is the real-life inspiration for the Iron Man series of films starring Robert Downey, Jr. The personal tale of Musk's life comes with all the trappings one associates with a great, drama-filled story. He was a freakishly bright kid who was bullied brutally at school and abused by his father. In the midst of these rough conditions and the violence of apartheid South Africa, Musk still thrived academically and attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he paid his own way through school by turning his house into a club and throwing massive parties.
He started a pair of huge dot-com successes, including PayPal, which eBay acquired for $1.5 billion in 2002. Musk was forced out as CEO and so began his lost years, in which he decided to go it alone and baffled friends by investing his fortune in rockets and electric cars. Meanwhile Musk's marriage disintegrated as his technological obsessions took over his life...
Elon Musk is the Steve Jobs of the present and the future, and for the past 12 months he has been shadowed by tech reporter Ashlee Vance. Elon Musk is an important, exciting and intelligent account of the real-life Iron Man.

Really enjoyed this background on the vision and drive of Elon Musk. Puts a lot of things in perspective and tells an amazing story. Well worth a listen.
Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. Gets really deep into what makes Musk and his companies what they are now. More than just a way to learn more about Musk, it shows some of what's necessary to accomplish such successes.
Well written book with a good relatively independent view of the history of Musks companies. Issue is repetitive nature of second half of the book- lots of the same principles come up time and again without really developing much further insight into the direction or the individual.
Being an engineer myself I found learning about Musk's approach and achievements fascinating and inspiring. Would highly recommend for anyone interested in technology or business.
In general, the man thinks big. Massive. He's a genius without care and a man with a mission. It's awe inspiring to hear his achievements. As mentioned in the book (paraphrasing), he's a love child of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.
Knowing we have people like Musk in the world is reassuring that we're not completely doomed.
This book is a one-time read, to get a history of Elon Musk. Once you're up to date, you can follow his current adventures outside the book.
A recommended biography of a person that sounds like a slave driver, but driven by passion for a better future and humanity.
when you listen to this book, you know your dream of changing the world can be achieved
"Amazing story! Inspiring man. Appendix downfall. "
Loved every moment of learning more about this man's story. Surely the ripples of what he is doing will be felt for decades to come. Looking forward to following more.
The audio book was wonderful. The only downfall being that the appendixes were only read out at the end, rather than where they were relevant to the story ... detracting from the end of the book somewhat.
"What a great book"
I listened to this on audible over the last month while at the gym. My brain got bigger at the same time that my muscles got bigger!
Well written, interesting, inspiring
"Must read for every engineer"
Albeit a bit long at the beginning the middle section about how Elon got his ventures started is incredible and inspiring!! Listening to it makes you want to work 150h/week
"an inspiring story"
an inspiring story by one of the great minds in business and someone that should be celebrated. highly recommend this book loved it
the story is nice some time.... looks a bit cooked .... but the audio performance was excellent and fun to listen
It is one of the best book i have ever listen till date.Elon Musk is great motivation for the 1st gen entrepreneurs.
"Truth really is stranger than fiction"
Inspiring, somewhat scary and even funny at times, Ashlee's portrayal of Elon Musk is sensitive but unbiased enough to dispel die-hard Starkian delusions. This book may leave you feeling somewhat disappointed in your own achievements, but hopefully with some momentum to do something about it.
This is a phenomenal book that creates a passion for success and a understanding of sacrifice to achieve this.
Clarity and Focus is key. The end came about a 1000 pages to soon!
Thanks a million for a great listen!
I loved reading this book and wished these types of books were recommended in school. We were only so naughty in school because we were bored.
