A bitter divorce and a turbulent love affair later, she emerges battered and bewildered and realises it is time to pursue her own journey in search of three things she has been missing: pleasure, devotion and balance.
So she travels to Rome, where she learns Italian from handsome, brown-eyed identical twins and gains 25pounds, an ashram in India, where she finds that enlightenment entails getting up in the middle of the night to scrub the temple floor, and Bali where a toothless medicine man of indeterminate age offers her a new path to peace: simply sit still and smile. And slowly happiness begins to creep up on her.

"It's what I'm giving all my girl friends." (Julia Roberts)
"This is a warm, funny, entertaining book that will make you want to eat, pray, love and write a bestseller, just like Gilbert." (The Guardian)
If you ever get that feeling that the life your living is not right and something is missing and it feels like it's only you then this book is for you. The idea that if we have everything that we need a partner, the latest gadgets and a good job then we will be happy is the beginning of this wonderful journey. I wasn't overly keen on the religious sections but felt that it did offer an important part of the journey. A travelogue/memoir that is well written both amusing and sad and incredibly positive. This audiobook is very well read by the author you feel the emotions of the events as though you are there sat next to her. A must if you feel a need for breath of fresh air but prepare yourself for the wanderlust ....
I absolutely loved this audiobook. I listened to it in one sitting I could not switch it off. Elizabeth has had an amazing journey and I feel very privileged that she has let me hear all about that journey. This memoir is funny, heart breaking and uplifting all at one time. I can't sing its praises enough, if you've ever wondered what you are doing with your life this is the audiobook for you!
Gilbert is a very engaging writer, smart and funny, direct and personal. She collects some gorgeous characters on her journey too. \"Richard from Texas\" - what a guy!
One of the best books I've listened to. Funny, witty, has depth and meaning. Her journey of self discovery is amazing. The beginning is a tad tedious as she describes her despair with her life, but stick with it - it's definitely worth it in the end. Gilbert has a very engaging way of telling the story too. Recommended.
It's trying to be the shack for buddhists or a soul shifting deep book about spriritualism and relationships but I just wished something would happen it is a bit self obsessed.
I have always been interested in how book and movie get along. A parent and a child? A brother and a sister? A friend and an enemy? ... Relationship between a book and a movie based on it varies a lot. So, what about "Eat, Pray, Love"?!
Frankly speaking, I watched movie first and remained in a state of excited amazement for a long time. I decided to go to the source. Here we are, listening to the audiobook narrated by the author herself. At first, I was disappointed a bit because I was inevitably trying to compare it with the movie. Once I stopped doing it, everything changed. I was making a lot of bookmarks and going back once and once again. I must admit the book itself is far deeper and richer than the movie is. So, if you are still thinking what to do first - to listen or to watch - my advice is certainly to listen first! What is more, it is always very appealing to listen to a book narrated by the author themselves. Who can do it best if not the author?!
By the way, answering the question posed at the beginning of the review ... Definitely, a beautiful intelligent sister (Cinderella, probably) and her fairy tale stepsister - not ugly, but pretentious, not stupid, but seemingly smart, trying to take advantage of her. Is there any need to clarify who is who there?
This book is really quite boring! It is not very impresionable and just a woman going through a crisis and seeming to have a bit of depression and a need to travel. I had such high hopes for it but it was a real let down.
"not bad at all!"
I heard lots of positive and some negative feedback on this book... it took me forever to decide to buy it, but I'm glad I did. Elizbeth Gilbert talks so well about the different phases she went through, and it's full of humor, emotion and insight. I am surprised this is abridged because parts of it were very detailed. I loved Gilbert's narration.
"Great listening to Gilbert"
I loved this book when I read it and enjoyed it all over again hearing Elizabeth Gilbert read it herself. She brings the events and people even more to life.
"Great book-for-girls!!! Amazing narration !"
Bought this audiobook because I wanted to "read" the book before watching the movie. Honestly, the movie trailer was the reason I decided to read this best seller and I`m so glad it did. The story is sweet, I liked the way the author describes in an "earthling" language, her inner journey to God and Divinity but what I did enjoy from beginning to end was Elizabeth Gilbert's narration. She totally brought all characters to life and transmited all kinds of feelings toward them. It was so vivid, like having cofee with your best friend and hearing all about her vacations.
What a delight! Thank you Elizabeth for your amazing gift I was enthralled and like another compulsive addictive I couldn't stop listening. Your book is the second book I have listened to and I am hooked.
I recommend this book to all who want to get connected to themselves or simply want to feel good about themselves.
"Eat, Pray, Love"
boring for male reader
"You don't want to miss this"
This book is everything to me. Elizabeth Gilbert looks like a shadow of me with this book. I have had the same thoughts, same yearnings... I love it!
