Editor reviews

In celebration of its 70th Anniversary, this is the complete and unabridged audiobook of Diary of a Young Girl, the memoir written by Anne Frank and narrated beautifully by English actress Helena Bonham Carter. The tragic early teenage years of Anne’s life that she documented in her diary are as powerful now as it was when it was first discovered and published in the years after World War II. Audible listeners will revisit or discover Anne’s intimate account of survival and family. A heartbreaking memoir from one young witness to a senseless and terrible war.

Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Narrated by Helena Bonham Carter.

The Diary of Anne Frank Is 'A Monument to The Human Spirit'

One of the most famous accounts of living under the Nazi regime comes from the diary of a 13-year-old Jewish girl, Anne Frank. Edited by her father Otto H. Frank and German novelist Mirjam Pressler, this is a true story to be rediscovered by each new generation.

12th July 1944:

'It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.'

In the summer of 1942, fleeing the horrors of the Nazi occupation, Anne Frank and her family were forced into hiding in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse.

Aged 13, Anne kept a diary of her time in the secret annexe. She movingly revealed how the eight people living under these extraordinary conditions coped with hunger, the daily threat of discovery and death and isolation from the outside world.

A thought-provoking record of tension and struggle, adolescence and confinement, anger and heartbreak, the diary of Anne Frank is a testament to the atrocities of the past and a promise they will never be forgotten.

"Anne Frank’s diary is one of the greatest books of the century … As she brings herself and her circumstances into such buzzing, engaged life on the page, she triumphs over her history." (Guardian)

"Still rings down the decades as the most moving testament to the persecution of innocence." ( Daily Mail)

Beautifully read by Helena Bonham Carter

I am so glad I listened to this audiobook. I had read the book as a little girl and hadn’t fully understood how much danger the 8 people were in. Highly recommend!

great performance by the reader

performance was great she emphasised things in a brilliant way. I also like this is this completed works of Anne as not having some things in it would be wrong x a lot different than I thought it would be but that's because it's honest teenager writing from her heart

To think this was written by Anne, knowing her fate. Is truly chilling. Read with great care and consideration. I'd go so far to say the best Read book I've heard on here.

Tissues at the ready...

Would you consider the audio edition of Diary of a Young Girl to be better than the print version?

This is a beautifully narrated version of this increadibly moving diary.
An insight into the thoughts and emothions of a young girl, growing and discovering herself, with the constant fears of life around her. In her well written diary, you'll become familier with all the members of her family, and the people she was forced to live locked up in a few small rooms with. Be prepared to listen to the heart-wrenching sadness, of what happens to each and every one of them.
Helena Bonham Carter does a fantastic job of narrating this powerful sombre, and thought provoking diary, written by a young girl, who wrote this book for no-one but herself, yet sends a story worldwide.

Heart breaking

This is well read and leaves a sense of loss at the end. It reads like a novel and I wish it was.

But such great writing and insightful and fairly inspiring. Much more in it than the original version I read.

Fantastically written a must read

I have read the book before but found I appreciated it much more as an audiobook. The little details can be missed when reading but the listening to the audiobook somehow provided better context and insight into Anne's world.

A fantastic book and piece of history.
