Editor reviews

In celebration of its 70th Anniversary, this is the complete and unabridged audiobook of Diary of a Young Girl, the memoir written by Anne Frank and narrated beautifully by English actress Helena Bonham Carter. The tragic early teenage years of Anne’s life that she documented in her diary are as powerful now as it was when it was first discovered and published in the years after World War II. Audible listeners will revisit or discover Anne’s intimate account of survival and family. A heartbreaking memoir from one young witness to a senseless and terrible war.

Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Narrated by Helena Bonham Carter.

The Diary of Anne Frank Is 'A Monument to The Human Spirit'

One of the most famous accounts of living under the Nazi regime comes from the diary of a 13-year-old Jewish girl, Anne Frank. Edited by her father Otto H. Frank and German novelist Mirjam Pressler, this is a true story to be rediscovered by each new generation.

12th July 1944:

'It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.'

In the summer of 1942, fleeing the horrors of the Nazi occupation, Anne Frank and her family were forced into hiding in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse.

Aged 13, Anne kept a diary of her time in the secret annexe. She movingly revealed how the eight people living under these extraordinary conditions coped with hunger, the daily threat of discovery and death and isolation from the outside world.

A thought-provoking record of tension and struggle, adolescence and confinement, anger and heartbreak, the diary of Anne Frank is a testament to the atrocities of the past and a promise they will never be forgotten.

"Anne Frank’s diary is one of the greatest books of the century … As she brings herself and her circumstances into such buzzing, engaged life on the page, she triumphs over her history." (Guardian)

"Still rings down the decades as the most moving testament to the persecution of innocence." ( Daily Mail)

Quite excellently read!

I read this about 45 years ago at school. I wanted to hear it again as it is indeed a classic record of ordinary Jews' lives in the war.
I think a lot of this is lost on children who can't really appreciate what the loss of liberty really means, so I particularly recommend this to grown adults!

We’ve all read this story in primary/secondary school though hearing Carter’s voice go into every gripping detail is incredible.

Heartbreaking, everyone should read this book.

Having written a diary for most of my life, I can't believe it has taken me so long to read this. And what's more, I can't understand why this is not mandatory reading in secondary school. I sobbed for a long time when I finished this book, and the feeling stayed with me for days. But if there ever was a lesson in humanity that might have a positive lasting effect on young minds, this is it. Anne was an exceptional young lady, and her tragic end along with millions of other Jews, should be a constant reminder of how the world cannot let such atrocities ever happen in our world, on any level. Narrator did a wonderful job too.

A window into the lives that lived in WW2

A simple but insighful story from the eyes of the victims of war. A beautiful yet sombre reminder that life shouldn't be taken for granted.

As relevant as whe it was written

Puts lockdown in perspective. It is an incredible real lived horrfying true story. Yet it is funny, sweet and poignant also.

It is a book with themes of resilience, despair, and growing up.

At the beginning, Anne was a child with a beautiful command of language. She was ambitious, free spirited, and funny.

By the end she is an astute observer of people with strong opinions. She is a wise educates young woman, cutting through a lot of social mores of the time. She is a feminist.

If u was looking for away to spend a credit, I would by this.

Also Helena is great narrator
