Summary

Sean Conway was stuck in a dead end life of his own making when he heard about a round-the-world cycling race. He was immediately inspired - but it was a huge undertaking, and he'd hardly been on a bike in years. Could he really cycle all the way round the world, solo and unsupported?

Six months later, after completing a punishing training schedule and packing up everything he owned into boxes, Sean was in Greenwich Park, on the start line of the adventure of a lifetime. Soon he was way ahead of schedule, averaging 180 miles per day, and on course to break the round-the-world cycling record. But then disaster struck, and Sean was forced to confront the possibility that he may not be able to complete the race....

In the course of his 16,000-mile journey, Sean travelled the famous pan-American highway across the Atacama Desert, outran tornados, relied on fellow travellers to ferry water across the Australian outback, and inadvertently joined a cycle club in Mumbai. He learnt things about himself he didn't know and rediscovered a spirit of adventure that changed everything.

This is an audiobook about an amazing and sometimes incredibly difficult journey, but it's also about never giving up when there's an opportunity to follow your dreams.

Great and inspiring read

Amazing, Inspiring, Witty. Loved every minute. Sean is an inspiration and absolute legend. The take away message for me from this book is Chase your dreams and don't be scared to get out there and go for it.

Great story.

I was slightly put off by the small amount of swearing at the start, but it was harmless really and the narrator soon settled in to Sean's very exciting story. Well worth a listen.

Started slow, got better, ended great

the first two or three chapters made me regret buying this book but persevering made me realise this is a wonderful read.

The highs and lows of extreme cycling

What made the experience of listening to Cycling the Earth the most enjoyable?

I particularly liked Sean's down to earth descriptions of his experiences. Sean dragged himself from depression, a dull job and obscurity into doing something really worthwhile. A race around the world.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cycling the Earth?

Sean's honesty as he describes the lows and then his reawakening and motivation into getting back to the job of riding, a lot of miles.

What does Stewart Clegg bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I liked Stewart's consistent narration and the way he reflects the moods of the writer as 'we' travel around the world.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were several events that were moving or funny. I've no wish to ruin the story but there's something on each continent Sean visits.

Any additional comments?

Where next Sean?

Awesome

For anyone in a hole after being dumped, listen to this for inspiration! It's one of those that makes you realise that your life goes on and you can do anything you want to rather than mope around like a sad act. My brother recommended this to me and I can't thank him enough for it. Get it listened to!

Really enjoyed this book

I listened to this while travelling to Australia so I was in the adventurous mood. The story was great and I loved listening to the tales of the journey. The narrator took some getting used to but after a while it was like a friend talking to me. If you need a pick me up or are off for an adventure worth a read.

Didn't want it to end

An inspiring story written in a down to earth style with plenty of humour. Well narrated and read at a reasonably fast pace while being easy to follow. I lose interest when narrators read really slowly so this was a nice change from some of the other travel books I've listened to.

I like bikes

No I love bikes so books about cycling heroics can always be found lying around the house.
This really makes you feel like You could get on your bike and do something extraordinary, which obviously you can.
It's very enthusiastically read and I really enjoyed the story.

Great listen - Pretty Inspiring

Really interesting and entertaining, both from a general "world adventure" view and especially from a cycling aspect, puts many things in perspective
