Summary

From his Cornish boyhood, Rory recounts his life of birdwatching, observing his first skylark while stoned; his repeatedly failed attempts to get up at the crack of dawn like the real twitchers; and his flawed bid to educate his mate Danny in the ways of birding.

Rory's tale is a thoroughly educational, occasionally lyrical and highly amusing romp through the hidden byways of birdwatching.

Panurus biarmicus

This is a most interesting and humorous book. Rory reads his account in a very lively and engaging style, so much so that I did nothing else other than draw all day whist listening!
I learnt a great deal and recalled a lot of existing knowledge. The account of visiting a hide for the first time is so, so true.
I would beware of listening to this in public for fear of laughing out loud!

very funny and surprisingly touching

I loved this book and it was made all the better by being read by the inimitable author.
It was very funny (of course), educational and very touching without being sentimental. The twist at the end came as a pleasant and surprisingly unexpected, er, surprise! :-)
Original, witty and very honest, this is a little treat of a book. Oh, and if you weren't that interested in birds (of the feathered variety) beforehand, you might think again having read this...

Not just for the twitchers

Books by comedians can be amixed bag. Some try to do a sitting down version of their stand up show, and they can get quite tiring after a while.
This book, however, strikes a good balance between Rory being funny in a natural way, and him telling a tale of his life and his passions.
yes, he does include quite a bit about twitching, but it isn't anything like hard work. Even if you're someone who's not into that kind of thing, it is pleasant enough to listen to someone talking about one of their passions with enough humour to make it entertaining still.
None of it feels forced, like he's trying very hard to sound funnier than you; it's an enjoyable journey through his life.

So entertaining

When is an audio book infinitely better than its hardback equivalent? When it?s ?Bearded Tit? read by the author. Rory McGrath?s eloquent delivery conveys so well his enthusiasm for birds - very informative and, at the same time, extremely witty.
I look forward to listening to this book again and again.

Surprisingly good!

I thoroughly enjoyed both Rory's story and the story of the birds he talks about so entertainingly. I didn't expect his romantic streak, either.
