Publisher's Summary

Apache is a blazing true story from the heart of Afghanistan - a tale of courage, comradeship, technology, and tragedy, straight from the cockpit of the world's deadliest helicopter.

When Ed Macy's career in the Paras was cut short by a brutal accident, he thought he'd never fight again. But joining the Army Air Corps gave him the chance to return to the front line. And when the army launched its attack helicopter programme, Ed was the first to sign up.

The Westland Apache AH Mk 1 is the deadliest, most technically advanced helicopter in the world - and only the top two per cent of pilots even make it through the training.

In 2007, Ed's Apache squadron was dispatched to Helmand, Afghanistan. Their mission: to protect the men on the ground. So when a marine goes missing in action during an attack on a Taliban stronghold, Ed and his team know they are the Army's only hope of getting him out ....

What the Critics Say

"This is essentially a book about boy's toys (mega-expensive boy's toys), after which you'll understand better why the war in Iraq is costing the American taxpayers an estimated $700m a day."(The Guardian)

"It's more about the lifestyle than the big battle"

if you're into your technical specs & military jargon, then this book's for you. If you don't have a good knowledge of this sort of thing, then unless you want to learn, stear clear!

I got a little bored with the first hour of the story being all about the specs of the Apache. It took a long time to get to the big battle story for which the author received his MC. This book does give a good insight into the lifestyle and horrors these pilots face regularly (and indeed the other fighting forces) while they are in Afghanistan.....

It's a remarkable true story, and from the relative comfort, peace and safety of your own home, is a worthwhile listen.

    "Absolutely Fantastic"

This is a great book that i would recommend without hesitation.
The action is fast paced and the information is descriptive.

I am ashamed to admit it, but I often found myself sat on the driveway, unable to leave the car, transfixed to the story.

The only criticism I have as a member of the Armed Forces is that the Narrator sometimes 'reads' an abbreviation rather than sounding out the acronym. This will bring a smirk to the faces of some, but does not detract from the story one ounce.

DOWNLOAD IT TODAY!!! You wont be disappointed

WOW! Simply un-put-downable. A fantastic testement to the heroes that are in the combat zone and brilliantly written. The Author has a way with words and truly a man I would happily share a pint or two with, I have the upmost respect and admiration for them all

    "Gripping"

I first read this book many years ago. I still have the hard back that I bought then. I think I was on my way to Iraq. I have read and re read it since and every time it's like the first. A brilliantly told story. Charlottes retort to the boss about what she could do but he could not still makes me laugh out loud.

    "awesome"
What did you like about this audiobook?

I am a newby this is the best book I have listened to so far. Until now I have been listening to Andy McNab nick stone series. (Fiction) but the real thing is more gripping and emotional.

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

So far I have only listened to fictional books . Although they were exciting it does not compare to actual events until I had this book recommended to me by a work mate I only wanted to listen to Andy McNab fiction.

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

It is very difficult to pick any individual scene as the whole book draws you in. I have often heard people saying they couldn't put a book down. I didn't ever see that it could be true until now. To coin a frase Its that good I brought the company, well the next book hell fire. Can't wait to get started.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

It is amazing to hear the lengths thet the men and women in the British armed forces will go to to protect their own.

Do you have any additional comments?

I would like to add the listening experience. Was made even better by the excellent job done by the narrator Sam Hazeldine.

    "Superb!"

    Superb!!

Ed Macy perfectly captures what it was like to serve and fight in Afghanistan and offers real insight into just how hard fought battles were and vicious they could be. Macy's gripping, fast-paced, honest and gritty writing style really puts the reader into his world and the incredible combat patrols and major battles he fought in.

Macy, though, was not your perfect fly-boy. No, the author is not a one-dimensional character that one would suspect was destined for such achievements. Rather, he turned his life around through sheer determination and hard work to become the decorated pilot he is.

There's not much I can say about this book other than to add that this is a fascinating read and really un-put-downable. It's a riveting and at times an adrenaline pumped white-knuckle ride. The key battles are written so well that you feel that you are right there in the cockpit with them and experiencing the heart-pumping series of events.

I literally could not stop listening to this excellently written account of what it was like to fly and fight the incredible Apache Longbow attack helicopter.

I will be downloading Ed Macy's other book on this subject "HellFire" just as soon as my next credit comes. Hell, I might even splash out on it now!

This book tells the story of the courage, determination and camaraderie of the British forces in Afghanistan and is highly recommended.

Narration was excellent too. Sam Hazeldine adds real emphasis and realism to this reading and tops off what is an amazing story.

    Movie anyone?

    "Fantastic"

This book makes you feel like your sitting in the Apache during the action, Ed Macy captures your imagination throughout, having two of my nephews serving with 3 Commando brigade out in Afghanistan at the moment this amazing account really brings home the courage and determination of the men and woman serving in such a stunningly beautiful yet savage area of operation.
