Summary
Tony Blair is the politician who defines our times. His emergence as Labour leader in 1994 marked a seismic shift in British politics. Within a few short years, he had transformed his party and rallied the country behind him, becoming prime minister in 1997 with the biggest victory in Labour’s history, and bringing to an end 18 years of Conservative government. He took Labour to a historic three terms in office, as the dominant political figure of the last two decades.
A Journey is Tony Blair’s first-hand account of his years in office and beyond. Here he describes for the first time his role in shaping our recent history, from the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death to the war on terror. He reveals the leadership decisions that were necessary to reinvent his party, the relationships with colleagues such as Gordon Brown and Peter Mandelson, the gruelling negotiations for peace in Northern Ireland, the battles over education and health, the implementation of the biggest reforms to public services since 1945, and his relationships with leaders on the world stage, including Clinton, Putin, and Bush. He analyses the belief in ethical intervention that led to his decisions to go to war, in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, and, most controversially of all, in Iraq.
A Journey is a book about the nature and uses of political power. In frank, unflinching, often wry detail, Tony Blair charts the ups and downs of his career to provide insight into the man, as well as the politician and statesman. He explores the challenges of leadership, and explains why he took on public opinion to stand up for what he believed in. Few British prime ministers have shaped the nation’s course as profoundly as Tony Blair, and his achievements and his legacy will be debated for years to come. Amid the millions of words written about him, this book is unique: his own journey, in his own words.

Very insightful (although his perspective)
I found this a fascinating listen about his time in charge of the country and the life and death decisions that he had to make. A really good listen

Very good.
Fair and frank view of the years in government. Respectful and detailed in all accounts of the 3 terms in which he served…it’s well worth a listen.

A fascinating glimpse of the curtain of political physiology
It’s fascinating to see both the human side of big politics being so similar to most aspects of society.
The huge scale of decisions the consequences of them with the desensitised to resensitesed rational. The storey continues

A Real Insight
A really excellent and candid account of Tony Blair's journey from non-policitian through to former prime minister. Every great issue of those days is covered. At the end of it I had a lot more respect for his achievements and a better understanding of those issues deemed, by some, to be his mistakes. It' was written in 2010. I listened to it in 2022 and I was struck by how the passage of time has vindicated many of his positions and decisions.

You don’t have to be a Blair fan to enjoy it
TB is a divisive character and he knows it, the book covers that aspect well, and addresses various subjects such as Iraq that make his legacy uncomfortable to celebrate. Yet his achievements were significant and the country definitely had a period of prosperity and a Brit-Pop ‘feel good’ factor that was only replicated in Thatchers time during the 80’s boom (another divisive figure).
It was genuinely interesting to hear the story behind the deal with Gordon Brown and TBs views on the future of Britain in the world order are hard to argue with. Truth is politics is boring without such and enigmatic leader and this country needs a dynamic and progressive Prime Minister post-Brexit.
This book is worth listening to and I binge listened to it, so it is engaging and interesting.

Mind changer
I grew up through my teenage years with TB as PM but never really knew of what his or New Labour’s policy’s were.
This book really opened my eyes to that and changed my mind on some of the priorities of the time.
A really interesting story worth reading/listening to.

Inherently interesting.
This was always going to be absorbing almost irrespective of the content. Blair sounded earnest, almost pained throughout.

Thank you Mr Blair
Thank you Mr Blair for this frank and enlightening account of a time of great change in British politics. I also thank you for your leadership of Britain and the changes you ushered in, some of which you are not given the credit you are due.
