Summary

First came the days of the plague. Then came the dreams. Dark dreams that warned of the coming of the dark man. The apostate of death, his worn-down boot heels tramping the night roads. The warlord of the charnel house and Prince of Evil. His time is at hand. His empire grows in the west and the Apocalypse looms.

For hundreds of thousands of fans who read The Stand in its original version and wanted more, this new edition is Stephen King's gift. And those who are listening to The Stand for the first time will discover a triumphant and eerily plausible work of the imagination that takes on the issues that will determine our survival.

book that makes one think how fragile our world is

This was the first Stephen King book I listened to. I had always thought Stephen Kings books were horror stories, how wrong I was. I usually listen as I work and a book has to be good to hold my

attention. This one certainly did and I found it difficult to stop listening, even when work was finished and I should have gone home. Some people might find it a bit long but I liked all the details and like long books anyway as I have a lot of hours. Would highly recommend this book and will go on to listen to many more books by this author.

Heading

Slow and a bit self - indulgent....and not easy to follow....for the first 35hrs(!) but the "Third Book" was worth the effort of the first two.

An ok read

If your looking for a good long book with superb character development and backstory this is great. However it lacks punch towards the end. It feels like all the work has gone into creating characters and backstory only to kind of wander and then just finish, not as good as dream catcher or under the dome these were much better reads that really draw you in

A classic.

This is, in my oppinion, "the Kings" best novel. The narrator does a great job in bringing the carrectors to life, and even tough its a long listen, you never get tired of listening to his woice.

Epic audio book

I dont often review the audio books I listen to, been a member for a long time now (189 titles). I go off the principle of "what lights your candle might not light mine", so I read the snippets and listen to the samples, very rarely read the reviews until I'm going to buy, usually my mind is made up by then though!
Right, prattling over. Excellent story, well written and just about the best Stephen King I've listened to or read.I thought Grover Gardener was absolutely fantastic as the story teller, at times he reminded me of Anthony Hopkins and so my spine was well and truely shivered! All in all I would recommend this, I put in the same pile as Dune, which is by far the best audio book I've listened to, for apocalyptical stuff, its up there with The Passage by Justin Cronin.

Favourite book of all time

Having read and adored The Stand I was a little wary of an audiobook version in case it spoiled my memories of the book. However I need not have worried as Grover Gardner does a great job of capturing the pace and spirit of the story.

There's probably no need to cover the plot points here as the true beauty of this story is actually the characterisation of the main cast, from Stu Redman and Fran Goldsmith through Harald Lauder all the way to the Walking Dude himself, each is drawn fully without stereotype and caricature until you feel you truly know each of them.

Highly recommended!

Extended edition well worth another visit

I had read and listened to the 1978 version and wasn't sure about investing the time in the extended edition. It was well worth it. The additions really flesh out a lot of the characters. You also get to meet one of the best characters King has written, in my opinion: The Kid.

I am staggered that The Kid was cut so ruthlessly from the first version. The character had me almost crying with laughter one moment and horrified the next. Sublime writing. And with Grover Gardner handling narration, it's a memorable journey. I've listened to three of Gardner's narrations now and he is always bang on the money.

Just as good all these years later

I read this when I was a teenager, and again as a young adult. Now I'm 40, and I watched the new TV show adaptation and enjoyed it so thought I'd revisit. obviously the book is a lot better than the TV show, and having an audiobook version really made a difference to the pacing and tension I think. I really enjoyed it and now I'm on a Stephen King audible binge. Sime are definitely better than others narration wise. I thought this narrator was pretty good. I seem to prefer older books by Stephen King, so sometimes that leads to questionable narrator, or audio choices. The new one I've started has weirdly placed 'creepy' music throughout, very distracting! So The Stands narrator and style was much more my style.
