Angie Martinez is the "Voice of New York". Now, for the first time, she candidly recounts the story of her rise to become an internationally celebrated hip-hop radio icon.
In her current reign at Power 105.1 and for nearly two decades at New York's Hot 97, Angie Martinez has had one of the highest rated radio shows in the country. After working her way up as an intern, she burst on the scene as a young female jock whose on-air "Battle of the Beats" segment broke records and became a platform for emerging artists like a young Jay Z. Angie quickly became known for intimate, high-profile interviews, mediating feuds between artists, and taking on the most controversial issues in hip-hop. At age 25, at the height of the East Coast/West Coast rap war, Angie was summoned by Tupac Shakur for what would be his last no-holds-barred interview - which has never aired in its entirety and which she's never discussed in detail until now.
Angie shares stories from behind the scenes of her most controversial conversations, from onetime presidential hopeful Barack Obama to superstars like Mary J. Blige and Chris Brown, and describes her emotional, bittersweet final days at Hot 97 and the highly publicized move to Power 105.1. She also opens up about her personal life - from her roots in Washington Heights and her formative years being raised by a single mom in Brooklyn to exploring the lessons that shaped her into the woman she is today.
From the Puerto Rican Day Parade to the White House, Angie is universally recognized as a powerful voice in the Latino and hip-hop communities. My Voice gives an inside look at New York City's one-of-a-kind urban radio culture, the changing faces of hip-hop music, and Angie's rise to become the Voice of New York.

"Good Job Angie!"
For Christmas 2016 my sister gave me a 3month subscription to audible.com and suggested this book, MY VOICE by Angie Martinez. At first I was like WHY would I want to read about Angie Martinez??? Lol 😂 I'm on the last chapter (it's a 7hr book) and I must say that I truly enjoyed this book. It's empowering to hear her story, trials, tribulations, successes, etc from a NY sista from the hood like US!! 😁 I'm glad SHE reads it because it made me feel like I was sitting with one of my homegirls talking about life. Since I am a new mom, I TOTALLY related to that chapter of her life and it feels good to know that my fears and insecurities were hers as well. Just a really, really good and honest book. Thanks Angie! I've forwarded the book on to my 2 best friends as well. Thanks Sis for this gift😘
"Angie!!!! Your Voice, Your Story, Our NY Nostalgia"
First, I don't think this story could have ever been done justice if it had been read by anyone other than the legend herself Angie Martinez. Having listened to her throughout her career on NY radio, her interactive style of speaking and interaction was already like tuning in and "coming home" to a familiar voice. THAT made all the difference. Second, her retelling of some of the most significant stories of her career filled in the blanks for all of her fans and audience regarding when, why and how certain events came about, without seeming gossipy or gratuitous. Her story resonates with being in the right place at the right time, and not waiting for an opportunity to be handed to you. Angie's strength (without her even knowing it at the time) was her ability to not let a lack of confidence or experience get in her own way. Anyone can learn a valuable lesson from that.
Her delivery, her style and her NY accent. As a native New Yorker familiar with her, it was second nature to laugh when she laughed and understand her use of vernacular. Besides, she has a voice for radio, so it was a natural extension to read her own story. There are some places where her cursing may bother a more prudish listener, but hey, that's how we do in NY.
Her Voice, Our Hip Hop Story: How Angie Martinez became the Voice of New York
This book is an excellent memoir for any lover of hip-hop, familiarity with radio personalities, or even a person looking for a light-hearted story of how someone can get from "there to here" and stay humble, maintain integrity and still be going strong.
"Awesome! Great read!"
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and Angie's voice was calming. Very inspiring! A must read!
