    "Rip-Off!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No. I purchased this expecting that sound examples would be audible - i.e. played on a piano. Instead, the audible book refers to figures and diagrams which are not available to me. I order to see these, I have to purchase an additional kindle version. I feel swindled!

Has Music Theory: from Absolute Beginner to Expert put you off other books in this genre?

Yes - the book is fine, but I'm only getting half the story which reduces the effectiveness by a considerable percentage

Would you be willing to try another one of Bryan Howard’s performances?

    Not via Audible

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    N/a

"Title is misleading & no audio examples"

The title of this book is very misleading. I think it is too complicated for an absolute beginner and it will not make a listener of any level an expert. I consider myself an advanced beginner and there is very little content with which I was not already familiar. It is a solid summary for someone with some musical experience to help them gain a better understanding of basic theory.

Also, being an audio book, I was expecting audio examples of the concepts, but there isn't a single one. There are a number of places where this would have been helpful. For example, when talking about major and minor scales, it would have been helpful to have an audio example demonstrating why major scales are considered to be happy and minor scales sad. To not go beyond simply reading the text of the book is a big miss on the opportunity to take advantage of the audio medium. There are a number of very good free resources on the internet that provide the same content and include audio examples. For me, there wasn't the 'value add' I expected for the price.

    "Excellent!"

I highly recommend this book. I didn't think that an audio book would work very well for this subject, but it does. I'll listen to this again.

    "Requires the Textbook"

This book references many tables that require the hardcopy of the textbook, which makes it not suitable as an audio book. Maybe in the future Audible can incorporate a visual feature to display these vital components.

What was most disappointing about Nicolas Carter’s story?

No good for Audible: every sentence seems to refer to diagrams on the page.

easy to understand..only comment some of the examples in the rhythm portion of the book would have been better with audio examples playing the various time signatures

    "Excellent but previous exposure helpful"
What made the experience of listening to Music Theory: from Absolute Beginner to Expert the most enjoyable?

At first I was skeptical about how an audiobook could possibly be a good way to study music theory since I had always approached it from a written perspective and used pencil and paper to help get the ideas under control. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised then when listening to this audio rendition of the book. The narrator's voice is great and the pacing is quite good. The flow of material has clearly been carefully thought out because not once did I have to go back to get something needed for the current spot in the book. The theory is built up very linearly from the most simple concept on to more complex items. I also found it a very pleasant experienced to put this title on my phone so that I could listen to a chunk of it when I was in the mood and of course my phone was always in my pocket so this was very convenient. Sometimes I listened to just a minute or two to get the next concept and then could chew on it.

Now I had been exposed to these topics many times before but certainly did not have them "down". This synopsis was great in unifying what I already had some slight familiarity with. I am not sure how a rank beginner would fare with this however. Perhaps that would require listening to very small chunks of material and then stopping to think about it for some time or to play around with the idea on paper or an instrument. But for me it was a great synthesis and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am not sure if it is too much or too fast for the beginner.

Full disclosure: The author of this title sent me a free copy of the audiobook through Audible.com if I would be willing to write a review. I suspect I got on his email list at his website quite some time ago. I do not know the author and therefore feel completely comfortable giving my honest opinion. Thanks for reading

    "not expert "

I was undecided whether to purchase the audio book or not. I've heard the sample and decided to give it a try. I wasn't presented to any new concept and I judge the highest concept brought by the author "intermediate". The author should have taken the audio book version to illustrate with actual sound examples. chance missed. my expectation was definitely higher.
