"All too Real"
Excellent play filled with real people and real issues. Enjoyed the story and the performance. Good story development leaves you satisfied and wanting more.
"Side-Splitting and Heart-Breaking!"
I've seen this show live and this is the next-best thing. Fantastic in every way!
"Funny and gut wrenching drama."
Sometimes outrageously laugh out loud funny, but the laugh sticks in your throat as often as not. This is at it's heart a gut wrenching family drama. All the more harrowing due to a great cast of actors that know and feel their characters. The emotions really comes across.
I hesitated when buying this. Do I really want to give almost three hours of listening time to a live audience play? Let me say, I did not regret it.
"Almost as good as being there..."
I never got to see this play live. This is the next best thing. I'm very glad I purchased this title. The story is compelling and very well written. I've read plays before, but this stars the original Tony award winning cast. Great way to spend 3 hours. Listening to a little bit of culture.
"this was good"
wow felt like I was actually watching a play.....I'm going to listen again. would recommend for a short read
"Hated the bad language! Too much!"
I absolutely hated the foul language! It was carried too far and ruined the story for me! The performers were good. The story was disturbing. But the cursing like a longshoreman ruined it. Total waste of my money and time.
"Excellent, but also see/read the play if you can"
This is a well-written, well-performed dark comedy that centers mainly around the effect of Violet's drug abuse on her family members. It's very real in the sense that nobody in this dysfunctional family is totally blameless, but as one-by-one their secrets are revealed, Tracy Letts leaves it up to you to decide who still deserves your sympathy (and I think some of them absolutely do).
Note that there is a lot of foul language, humor at the expense of a drug addict, and themes of suicide as well as mental, physical, and sexual abuse. If you're distressed by any of these, this comedy might not be for you. It is, first and foremost, a rather depressing family drama lightened by frequent moments of humor.
I'm biased because I've already seen and read the play, both of which I recommend doing before listening if you can. It's possible tiny bits of this recording may be confusing without seeing what's going on. For example, characters eavesdrop on each other a lot, and you miss their reactions if you can't see them. That said, I think it does do a pretty good job of keeping you up to date on the most important happenings, so it's still worth it.
This emotional interplay of family relationships and the role of grace and forgiveness kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the performance.
"Emotional and Exciting"
Did not realize I was purchasing a Play instead of a short story. I am so glad I did. Easy to follow the characters and scene changes. A worthwhile listen and now I would like to see the movie . Very intense, exciting and emotional - a typical family at its worst. Nicely performed--bravo.
This was recorded as a live performance and many times the audio was so poor that you could not understand the speaker. The story was good, but this type of recording did not work.
