"Thought provoking but could be edited better..."
I came across this recording while in search of Dr. Davis' latest book "The Meaning of Freedom: And Other Difficult Dialogues." The last time I saw and "Angela Davis Speaks" recording it had been released in 1971 and I found it on iTunes. Perhaps this updated short performance is Audible's way of "testing the waters" to see if publications by this author will sell. In this age of electronic texts, things written and narrated by thinkers will most assuredly be profitable.
Angela Davis is one of the most important minds in existence today. The ideas and the issues she brings forth are relevant and will cause the listener to pause and rethink their own views. Her life has been spent in the pursuit of justice and her oratory arguments hit their mark time after time.
I would have given this 5 stars overall but the editing of this short narration leaves a bit to be desired. This recording is a series of topics (ideas) that have been culled from speeches Angela has given. The problem is that the segue between the topics (or ideas) is choppy so that the recording does not flow as it should. Granted this may have been acceptable back in 1971 when the original "Angela Speaks" was recorded, today the listener expects a recording that is tad amount to actually being in the lecture or performance hall with the orator.
Overall I enjoyed the recording and would purchase it again.
I loved Angela's honesty and experiences.
My favorite character is Angela. She speaks the truth.
She spoke with such command.
Yes, I did listen to it all in one sitting.
This book is educational and inspiring.
"First time for me!"
I have never listened to anything like this before. The issues addressed in this book are ones that effect us all. She is inspiring and thought provoking. I truly enjoyed listening to her speak.
i loved the performance. The delivery was very wonderful but it felt a little choppy
"Angela Davis Deserves Better"
Angela Davis is one of the most inspiring intellectual minds of our generation. She speaks with great clarity, conviction and compassion.
Whoever edited this speech together managed to put the chapters in non-chronological order to the point I thought I had hit Shuffle by mistake.
One would wonder if that were intentional to confuse the listener... but that's just me being paranoid.
I will try to find this speech on another platform. Don't spend your $2.95 on this one.
it's amazing how you can take a story from any generation and it is still applies to issues of today.,
"Poor Editing Job"
The sound gaps, the length & amount of them, are off-putting. No cohesiveness to the speech.
"really bad editing."
disjointed audio clips make it hard to follow. still worth it to hear her voice.
"More, More Dr. Davis Lectures"
I enjoyed hearing Dr. Davis speak to young adults in several different college settings. I would love to hear a longer, comprehensive, set of lectures that are masterfully edited.
"Great material, not best editing"
It was great to hear delivery of speeches rather than read them.
Hearing the audience's reactions, a sort of dialogue that wouldn't happen in print version, adds another dimension for sure.
This is perhaps a better "best of" grab bag from speeches than an introduction to Angela Davis's work. Though thoughtfully put together, I had hoped for a more continuous set of speeches rather than the several fragments lifted and stitched together.
