Dan "Spider" Shepherd is used to putting his life on the line - for his friends and for his job with MI5. So when one of his former apprentices is kidnapped in Pakistan, Shepherd doesn't hesitate to join a rescue mission. But when the rescue plan goes horribly wrong, Shepherd ends up in the hands of al-Qaeda terrorists. His SAS training is of little help as his captors torture him.
Shepherd's MI5 controller Charlotte Button is determined to get her man out of harm's way, but to do that she's going to have to break all the rules. Her only hope is to bring in America's finest - the elite SEALs who carried out Operation Neptune Spear - in a do-or-die operation to rescue the captives.

Paul Thornley is a superb narrator and and brings the action and adventure to life
I could not put this book down and though I did not listen to it in one sitting , it did not take me long to finish.
Stephan Leather is a very good well researched author, he certainly has inside information about the world of espionage. I have not heard a bad book by him.
Well worth listening to .
Try his Jack Nightingale novel for another insight into the writing talents of this authour
Great Story; Great narration as always from Paul Thornley
The last one... excellent ending
It had me horrified at times, but made me smile also, but kept me gripped right the was through..
I love Dan Shepherd... he is a well rounded character and stays true to the end. Paul Thornley was excellent as ever, although one of the American accents was a bit dodgy at times, hesounded like a Geordy!
Good characters and narration.
At first the narrating style of leaving gaps and emphasising wrong parts jarred me ... But I had a lot of gardening to be done and it occupied me
A modest genius & all round good bloke!
I genuinely could not put this down. Paul Thornley is truly THE benchmark by which all narators of this genre are judged.
Leather and Thornley make a formidable paring can't wait for more.
I will be buying more Stephen Leather books this was outstanding. Combined with the top class Paul Thornley narration I was enthralled.
Spider is a top agent but MI6 carelessly throw him to the wolves. It takes his dedicated MI5 boss to try to get him out of trouble
This is the first Stephen Leather book I've listened to and I would be happy to listen to the others
Avid audio book listener, into Crime, Thriller, Mystery and Adventure.
A great book by Stephen Leather. Throughly enjoyed the listen and can't wait for the next Spider Shepherd novel. Brilliant.
Not sure not read it! lol
The book was great throughout, had my on the edge of my seat! so want Shep & Button to get it on! Come on Stephen you know it makes sense! lol
As always the best!! PT for president!
Nearly if I had time, certainly sat outside the front of my house in the car waiting for a natural break! (I listen to all mine in the car, I do 3 hours a day travelling to work!)
Awesome, in a word! Stephen Leather & Paul Thornley a fantastic combination....
My perfect night in: Cup of tea, all my wonderful audible books and dramas and a comfortable seat on top of my bed. Nuf sed'
What a great story! I love Andy Mcnab books, and have been looking for something to take my fancy that is of a similar action packed nature. This book is gritty, tough and will keep you entertained for hours, just like Mcnab's books have done for me.
Now I have finished most of Mcnab's books, I am so pleased to finally find another series of books that will keep me entertained to a similar level. Paul Thornley is the boss of ALL narrators, and he is faultless playing Dan Shepherd.
This ex - SAS soldier is my new Nick Stone, from the Mcnab series. I am moving on to book 1, and hopefully I will work my way through this series with the same excitement I did with Mcnab's novels. A great start.
We really enjoyed this - good, topical plot about radicalised Al Queada terrorists. Just enough technical details without the ridiculous full maintenance manual of every gun in the story we've had before. And very well read.
"A good stand-alone story"
This is part of a series, but as my headline says, it works by itself. Stephen Leather does his research and weaves an interesting storyline of fictional characters into real places and events.
Paul Thornley's characters are all superb - his accents and genders are all individual. Often sounds like more than one person reading. One of my favourite audiobook performenrs.
Could not turn this book off. Great story line bringing several old characters into the book.
Superb narration yet again.
Andy McNabs 'Nick Stones' series.
Range of different accents and different characters is second to none.
Hurry up and write the next one.
