I enjoy reading but never find the time to pick up a book so Audible has been a great find! Addicted to good detective crime books!
Listened to this straight after book 3 which I would highly recommend as the story continues from the end of that book. Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and couldn't take my headphones out! Sean Barrett does his normal excellent job of bringing the characters to life.
Am disappointed it had to end! Not sure there are any more of this series? More please!
Robert Wilson has written another first class detective thriller, which works very well as an audiobook and is superbly narrated by Sean Barratt. Great stuff and strongly recommended.
However, if this is your first Robert Wilson thriller, you will probably get more from it if you were first to read his previous two books featuring the Spanish detective, Javier Falcon - particularly "the Hidden Assassins" as this book - Ignorance of Blood - follows on directly from the end and there are quite a few back references, which are likely to be confusing if you are not familiar with the earlier book. "Hidden Assassins" is also available on Audible and comes highly recommended as well. Both books are real five-star listens.
marathon listener, very discerning about the narrator quality...
I found Ines's beatings in the last one hard to stomach, but this book is worse, the toe? Honestly? I think the characters are great and the geographic and cultural context brilliantly drawn into the plots, but I listen to audio books to lift the boredom of weekend household chores and ling drives... And detailed graphic violence is really off putting. This is my last Falcon listen.
"One of the best..."
Robert Wilson is a very good writer. And he writes a very good book - one of the best of this genre that I have read. His characters are finely drawn with economy and depth. He understands people, their motivations, and how they can react in the face of disparate levels of stress. His detailed development of plot is masterful - marked by a credible combination of circumstance and random complication. This is a great story and read with perfect pitch by Sean Barrett. Thoughtful detective/thriller afficionados will not go wrong with this one. It's a gem. Mike Connelly. watch out!
"The smartest crime fiction writer"
Robert Wilson's crime/terrorist fiction is so well researched and well written it is hard to tell from non-fiction. I like fiction to be believable and savvy and Wilson writes about crime and terror in Spain and Morocco with flair and knowledge about what is happening in both countries. His Inspector Falcon is flawed and very human, but like all good cops is driven to find the answers and solve the crime. Robert Wilson is one of the very best writers in any genre.
"Great suspense but a bit over the top"
I hadn't read Robert Wilson in a while and going back to him with Ignorance of Blood was a good reading experience. He's clearly become a better writer over the years. His characters are complex and interesting. The plot is convoluted, many layered. But it's a bit much: his hero, Falc??n, is a Spanish superman. Nonetheless, I loved Se??n Barrett's performance.
If you enjoy early Le Carre, Martin Cruz Smith, or Phillip Kerr, you might really want to give Robert Wilson a try. An intelligent, complicated, credible, (well, for a police procedural), well written mystery/thriller. Dialogue that doesn't offend the ear; tense, gripping, but not overly graphic or inane violence; relationships that aren't driven by the author's need to write bad erotica. Characters to like, to care about, to fear for and to fear. A great listen excellently narrated.
