Summary
In the wake of a devastating double homicide by one of their own, the army takes matters into their own hands to hunt down the man responsible. In a tense race to stop a civilian terrorist attack, it's down to an elite team to take on the shadowy forces that lie in wait.
When a British Special Forces soldier goes rogue, carrying out an attack at a US Army base in Syria leading to the death of two men, ex-MI5 controller Charlotte Button is hired to work out what his plan is and to take him down before he can carry it out.
When the man returns to the UK, it looks like the threat will be a lot closer to home. Charlotte puts her best man on the case - hitman Lex Harper. It's up to Lex to assemble a crack team and get to the soldier before he carries out what could be a massive terrorist attack. But Charlotte might require Lex's help with a more personal problem, too. As ex-MI5, Charlotte knows a lot of information about a lot of important people. And now someone has gone to extreme lengths to get to that information by breaking into her safe deposit box in a Hatton Garden-style armed robbery.
While it's down to Lex to prevent a potential terrorist attack on British soil, Charlotte must work out who is after her and what they want.

Emerging From Shepherd's Flock
This is an interesting move from Stephen Leather. Moving on from Dan Shepherd he has promoted from within and Lex Harper emerges as a fully formed lead. Although the centre of attention may have shifted Leather certainly appreciates what sells to his readers and he has delivered in style with this one.
A plot that must be a considerable worry for modern-day governments. The levels of professionalism and expertise in today's modern special forces is phenomenal. Given how so many veterans feel concerned about what they are fighting for and let down by their countries after they end their service the idea of someone going rogue feels very credible.
As a lead Harper has much less baggage than Shepherd and certainly his own moral compass which it's fair to say is not pointing consistently in the same direction as international law might prescribe. The story itself moves along at a decent pace and also brings in a few other old faces all brought to life very well by Paul Thornley who seems to be a very natural fit for these books.
In all a very highly satisfying read.

I'm a fan -love them all
another good Leather and Thornley duo, Paul reads the character's just as I expect them to sound, love his style. I think Leathers work should be relived in movie or at least great TV dramas. Great to see the old players work well without Shepherd, please keep going Stephen 😉

Amazing new front man
Always liked Stephen leather books , the Spider Shepherd series actually started me off reading books as an adult, the way leather interweaves stories is amazing and has wrote some of my all time top 10 books , Lex Harper now gets to join Spider in my favourite book characters, I listened to this book at work and couldn’t wait to press play everyday, so incredibly well written and as a character so easy to get behind and cheer for , can’t wait to read more about Lex and his gang , a phenomenal read , loved it

Glad to see Charlotte Button back!
I was gutted when Charlie was booted out of the Shepherd series, as I really enjoyed her and Dan's relationship. So I'm glad she's back in full swing, with Lex Harper, with less rules to manoeuvre! Harper is great; his sense of morality and brutal justice makes him the perfect assassin.

Another gripping listen.
Stephen Leather keeps on delivering. Whatever he writes he dies it brilliantly. So well researched , I've been to lots of places he writes about and he almost takes you back there. More characters keep in getting deeper on the twisting , turning journeys.
