Summary

It starts with a trip to a local amusement park. David Harwood is hoping a carefree day at Five Mountains will help dispel his wife Jan's recent depression, black moods that have led to frightening thoughts of suicide. Instead, a day of fun with their four-year-old son Ethan turns into a nightmare.

When Jan disappears from the park, David's worst fears seem to have come true. But when he goes to the police to report her missing, terrified that she's planning to take her own life, the facts start to indicate something very different. The park's records show that only two tickets were purchased, David and Ethan's, and CCTV shows no evidence that Jan ever entered the park at all.

Suddenly, David's story starts to look suspicious - suspicious enough for the police to wonder if she's already dead, murdered by her husband. To prove his innocence and keep his son from being taken away from him, David is going to have to dig deep into the past and come face to face with a terrible childhood tragedy - but by doing that he could risk destroying everything precious to him.

Linwood creates a character you love to hate

Loved the story. Linwood has created a character you just can’t like, David is so arrogant pigheaded and naive, and just doesn’t understand that what he believes to be true just simply isn’t, he’s never wrong, and he can’t keep his mouth shut, I loathe him. Now that’s brilliant writing.

A Great Book

I came across this author by accident after wading through a number of bargain bucket audio CD's on a local market stall. ?2.50 for a brand new unabridged recording of 'No time for Goodbye' how could I go wrong. Ever since then I have watched with anticipation for further releases from this author and have not been disappointed once again with this fantastic gripping, twisting well read story.
I listen to audio stories in the car on the way to and from work but with this book it's just not long enough and find myself looking for any excuse to listen to more.

A little disappointed.

Prior to listening to "Never Look Away", I had listened to four Linwood Barclay novels which were fantastic.

What I didn't like most about this book was its narration. Jeffrey Cumming's was really not to my liking and I feel bad narrators can ruin even the best of books.

Secondly the story wasn't that engaging and I found my concentration drifting on numerous occasions. Unfortunately I didn't finish the book so I cannot say if it improved further in.

Superbly twisty storyline!

The slow reveal of back stories, the twists and turns of the storyline and the gradually escalating tension make this an excellent book. The narration is good but the audio at the start made it sound like the narrator was a yard away from the microphone and speaking in a cupboard. Odd - but I got used to it. Overall, definitely recommended.

A randomly discovered delight

I downloaded this based on the strength of reviews. The sample on here didn't sound great but thought I'd give it a go anyway as I'd seen a review that the narration was better than the sample indicated.

I really enjoyed this. Its an easy listen, not particularly cerebral, but it had me hooked from fairly early on and I finished this very quickly.

The narration was very good, and able to convincingly, and seamlessly, deliver all the characters from young to old, male to female.

I've now downloaded No Time For Goodbye from the same author and going to see how that one goes.

This would make a good movie

What made the experience of listening to Never Look Away the most enjoyable?

The story starts with a commonplace family outing which suddenly goes very badly wrong. From then on the mystery twists and deepens, clues are revealed and I found myself reluctant to stop listening.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Although they were minor characters, David's father and Jan's mother were very well drawn and presented an entirely realistic picture of how people can behave in stressful and painful situations.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

"Just when you think you know someone ..."
