Summary
When disgraced spy Solomon Vine's friend and rival Gabriel Wilde vanishes without trace, it's only Vine who might be able to discover what has happened to him. A single missing file holds the key. That, too, is gone. But its contents, Vine is told, are incendiary.
There were few Wilde could trust. And being one of them appears to have fatal consequences. But as Vine's off-the-books investigation begins to reveal the shocking truth, he realizes there's much more at stake than one man's life and the reputation of the Secret Intelligence Service....

Taut, twisty & tense
Well structured and put together in a way that doesn't lose the listener. You are drawn into the puzzle completely

Top Drawer
It’s almost a cliche to mention ‘Le Carre’ when talking about modern spy stories but it is fully merited here. The skill of the writing and the twists of the plot are superb as are the very subtle nods towards Le Carre. But is is the themes of loss, betrayal and a forever out of reach redemption that make this such a great book.
The performance is brilliant. No stupid accents just well paced and read with an understanding of the text many the parrots on Audible would do well to emulate. Highly recommended

Compelling
Taut, precise writing that is a credit to the author. I listened avidly to every word and it allowed my imagination to visualise the plausible scenarios. Excellent narration. I will seek out the author and reader again. Well done those involved.

fantastic narration
this book at times became boring due to the politics and repetition of coded language but was a free listen so I persevered. I enjoyed it and love the narrators voice.

Fast paced Le Carre type page-turner
One of the things I like about Le Carre is the pace. Its just so slow. These are much more action packed and quick, but quite ingenious and a good listen. If this had been a Le Carre it would have been twice as long. If Len Dieghton three separate books. But I like both and I like this writer. The main character is a really good vehicle and I will read more, but I dont know if he needs to take himself more seriously or whether he is writing for a shorter attention span.
Anyway. Good spy thriller.

Good story,
The ending followed a conventional crisis and resolution. Otherwise well read and potentially a good read.

Excellent
I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent story & as always, Colin Mace is an excellent narrator.
I did suss the storyline though ... but I guess the reader/listener is supposed to have solved the puzzle before the main character does...? Highly recommend...

Hard going in places
The author clearly knows his subject and I did enjoy his novel The Scarlet Papers. However towards the end this book dragged with all the double and treble think. The narrator is excellent.

I could not feel engaged with this book
Dull and humourless .. straight forward spy story .. I kept jumping chapters towards the end … perhaps Mick Herron has spoilt me .. as this really was not up to much
