Summary

Glasgow 1953: a hard city at a hard time. The war may be over but the battle for the streets is just beginning, and shady investigator Lennox is the man in the middle.

The McGahern twins were on the way up until Tam, the brains of the outfit, becomes the victim of a vicious contract killing. Tam's brother Frankie turns to Lennox to find out who killed his twin. Lennox refuses. Later that night, Frankie turns up dead, and Lennox finds himself in the frame for murder.

The only way of proving his innocence is to solve the crime - but he'll have to dodge men more deadly than Glasgow's crime bosses before he gets any answers.

Engaging

At the beginning, I wasn't too sure of where the story was going nor if I would want to continue. Soon though, I became intrigued and it turned into one of those books that you're keen to get back to as the plot twisted and turned.

A film noir experience. From a book.

I loved the narration of this. Transported you back to the fifties(apparently as I am not that old). Good old fashioned storytelling mixed in with believable characters and a decent plot. Grips you all the way through which is what it’s all about.
Look forward to the next one.

Best narrator of audiobooks

Came to the Lennox series because I am steadily working through books narrated by Sean Barrett. He is the best there is. Evocative, engaging story and characterization by Sean outstanding as always. Now onto book 2...

Excellent

I’m really looking forward to more from this author. A very good listen. The main character, Lennox, is like a Scottish (actually Canadian, which has far less relevance than the fact that his life is embedded in Glasgow. I think he counts as Scottish) Philip Marlow but with more swearing.

Excellent narration.

Really entertaining story

I bought this book on a whim, eventually sold by Sean Barrett who I love narrating the Harry Hole books. His accent of the main character confused me until I worked out that's probably what a Scot who'd lived in Canada would sound like. Amazing! The story was like a hard boiled detective novel set in Glasgow, so even more hard boiled. A bit crazy, violent but lots of humour, I'm really glad I got this audiobook. I will look out for more by this author especially if Sean Barrett is narrating.

Too violent

I suppose I should have realised - Glasgow noir 1950s - but did not. Could not finish listening - ridiculous amount of beating to be taken by one person. These books should have a clear violence warning.

What a combination

Sean Barrett reading a McDonald’s menu would be a joy but when reading a brilliant Graig Russell now le, what a joy and delight.

My thanks and hat off to Messrs Russell and Barrett

Probably a good story, but needs a Glasgow voice

This book was spoiled form me by the narration. The story has a strong Glasgow theme, but the narration isn't authentic at all. Coming from Glasgow, the mispronunciations and lack of Glasgow accent made it impossible to listen, and for that reason I will return it. However I will probably purchase for Kindle as th story was promising.

Lenox

I have listened to this several times and it never gets stale.
I have all the Lenox series, they are compelling and enthralling, complexed, can’t wait for the next in this gripping saga.
Sean Barrett brings to life all the participants with a reality that’s uncanny, as he dose in all the books that I have listened to with him as a reader.
Enjoy.
