Summary

Aurelius Castus is one of the leading military commanders of an empire riven by civil war, but age is telling upon him. Castus discovers that the emperor's son Crispus aims to depose his ruthless father and restore the old ways of Rome. With a sadistic torturer on his trail, Castus must choose between honour and survival, and face a final confrontation with the most powerful man in the Roman world: the emperor Constantine himself.

peace at a price

masterful story to climax this series, the sea battles and attention to detail are brilliant, the narration excellent as usual, but sadness at the loss of characters who've been on this long journey, can castus finally have peace, one last fight defending his home and family. the Latin bounded about aside as I sought translation, this has been a tremendous epic over 30yrs from slaves to emperors thourghly enjoyed.

Castus just gets better

I’ve loved the whole series and this was no exception. Castus is getting on a bit now and becoming more reflective than his earlier hot headed heroics. Here we find him in an impossible position as he struggles with loyalties torn between the increasingly tyrannical Constantine and his impetuous son Crispus.
Some bits really stretch reality but if you’ve got to this point then you just love Castus so much you take it all in your stride.
Jonathan Keeble is an excellent narrator and really makes it such a pleasure to listen to.

Brilliant story superbly narrated.

I had thought that Bernard Cornwell was about the best of the best but I confess that Ian Ross tells a really great story and that Jonathan Keeble is unsurpassed in his narration.
Everything is here; the desert, people, war bands. The smells and stink is well drawn. Keeble lives and breathes the characters like no other I have come across.
