Summary

The downloadable audiobook edition of Meg Rosoff's charming coming-of-age novel, How I Live Now, set over a summer of love and destruction. Read by the actress Amber Sealey.

American girl Daisy has had a troubled background, and is sent from New York to stay with her charmingly shambolic family of British cousins, who she has never met. They are Isaac, Edmond, Osbert, and Piper. And two dogs and a goat.

Daisy has never met anyone quite like them before and, as a dreamy English summer progresses, Daisy finds herself caught in a timeless bubble as she slowly begins to piece herself together with the the help of her super-eccentric and slightly psychic cousins.

Not only does Daisy get better as she easily succumbs to the charms of their adult-free rural home, but she finds herself falling in love with one of her cousins in this intense, gorgeous, summery bubble where they live a timeless existence. So timeless, that when war breaks out they barely seem to notice....

Daisy's life is changed forever and the world is too.

Amazing

I watched the film before listening to this and I can say they're a little different. However I love this and even though she falls in love with her cousin it's still fantastically brilliant!! I would totally recommend this!!

Abridged- cut out a LOT of important stuff.

this is one of my favourite books, but this version is abridged pretty badly. Honestly, I love audiobooks, but this story has such a unique style of writing (especially in twrms of quotation) that I'd suggest reading it instead of at all possible. between the missing parts and the unique protagonist voice, it's worth it, I promise. Anyway yeah it says a lot that this is the first book I returned on Audible. (I think?)

How can anyone write something this Magical?!

I first read this at least 15 years ago as a teenager. I then read it again in my early 20s when I found my copy and got to relive the magic again. I’ve now discovered it on audible and listened again at 27 and it really never gets old. I could listen again and again. I really can’t explain how a book that’s only 3.5hours long could have left such a lasting impact on me, but I genuinely find myself yearning for the story at random times across the year. The characters are incredible, the story is immersive, beautifully written, and it’s gentle humour and never ending optimism and hope just make it incredible. Also, I recommend reading the hard copy because as lovely as the audiobook is in its own right, you don’t get the full impact of the unique writing style. There are no speech marks in the whole book, all speech is described (I asked them what they were doing and they said, nothing. As opposed to I asked them “what are you doing?” And they said “nothing”). It gives the story such a warm folklore feeling, like Daisy is sat with you by a river and telling you the story. Top 5 books of all time, MUST READ.

eh

My review contains spoilers so yeah.
I had to read this for class. the story feel like it's in the two parts "she's in love with her cousin and oh yeah there's a war going on." and then "there's a war going on and oh yeah she's in love with her cousin." I was a little disappointed that Piper (the best one) didn't kill anyone, I had money on that happening. Also disappointed that Edmund (the physic dog twin kid) didn't die. The part where she came back to England had me exited that he was dead but it turned out I was wrong so... Also the whole thing about the mind reading should've been explained or not happened at all. I think a lot of this book shouldn't have happened at all, exept Joe dying that was cool.
yeah anyways 2/5.
