Summary

The Roman Empire is on the brink of civil war. Only Maxentius, tyrant of Rome, stands between the emperor Constantine and supreme power in the west. Aurelius Castus, promoted from the ranks for valour, is now a tribune in Constantine's army. But as Constantine becomes increasingly devoted to Christianity, Castus is forced to ask himself whether he is backing the wrong man....

The coming war will decide the fate of empire, but also expose shadowy realms of treachery at the heart of Rome itself.

Critic reviews

"Ian imbues any situation with some wonderful twists, reinforcing that nothing in life (and therefore within these pages) is as simple as it seems...a writing masterclass in adding research and factoids that help rather than hinder the pace." ( The Bookbag)
"A thumping good read." (Ben Kane)

Gritty

Thoroughly enjoyable once again. Narration excellent. Replete with battle scenes, gritty with the noise of rage, blood lust, death, defeat and victory.

Just brilliant!

And I thought Bernard Cornwall could not be surpassed!
It's infuriating when you have read all from your new favourite author and are looking around for something else. But to find Ian Ross has been so enjoyable and also to have Jonathan Keeble narrate the stories has been a joy!
Jonathan Keeble, what a performance!
And it is a superb performance. He brings all the characters to life with his interpretation.
So what next?

Not as good as previous ones

Too many long battle scenes and not enough story or intrigue. Think I have the next one, as previously got through a sale but otherwise probably wouldn’t continue with series. Hopefully next one is more story less violent scenes

Cactus the victor!

Superb story in series with great historical detail, unflinching depiction of battle and Castus' personal and professional journey. Rome brought to life and the life of Roman soldiers,if you are going to read only one series about Rome and the soldiers who served, make it this series.
