Summary

A HIT NETFLIX FILM, WINNER OF 7 BAFTAS AND NOMINATED FOR 9 OSCARS

The most famous anti-war novel ever written.

One by one the boys begin to fall...

In 1914 a room full of German schoolboys, fresh-faced and idealistic, are goaded by their schoolmaster to troop off to the 'glorious war'. With the fire and patriotism of youth they sign up. What follows is the moving story of a young 'unknown soldier' experiencing the horror and disillusionment of life in the trenches.

Powerful antiwar novel.

Gosh for such a small book/ 7 hours of Audio, this book packs a powerful punch to your guts and heart. Again one of those books I was told to read at school and I just did not want to. In hindsight I probably would not of understood it. The author takes you through his life as not more than a boy soldier enlisting, to the front lines of WW1, and the physical and mental scars it leaves.

Right Down to the Dirt under the Fingernails

Where does All Quiet on the Western Front rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

the very best

What did you like best about this story?

at no point did we suffer the glory, the pomp, or the hollywood endings

Which scene did you most enjoy?

the very end ... I had set myself up for disappointment or a lack of closure, but found it as a reader, which is necessary with such moving and disturbing subject matter

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Any additional comments?

this book is shock and awe in the face for the glory hunters, the fantasists and the myth-makers ... a breath-taking truth cutter ... why was this not on my school curriculum?

Fresh from 100 years

Astonishing book, that has aged not one minute since it was written. Extremely well narrated too, hitting the right tones. A rare 5 stars from me and well deserved

Powerful and Moving Book, very well read.

A book that demonstrates the effects of war on a person from the view of a world war one soldier. It reveals war in its terror and shows how people learn to live with it as best they can. The futility of WW1 is explored and it has many parts that leave you with the aching sorrow of loss. Not the most light hearted of books but one that should not be missed.

A masterpiece

A truly powerful and beautiful book and one that should be mandatory to better understand the senselessness and desperation of war. Beautifully written and narrated. A testament to all the millions who were lost for the benefit of the few.

Sympathetically told story of the horrors of WW1

A young man goes to war full of idealism and love for his country.

He tells the story of his horrible experiences without any gung-ho or glamorisation as he slowly loses his regimental mates to the war.

This is a classic and I have "read" it now for the first time although it should be required reading for all.

As a follow-up, look up the author's name in an online encyclopaedia and see just what the Nazis thought of him!

Classic Book - Beautifully Read!

I discovered this book in the school library 50 years ago and read it without knowing that it was a classic. I returned to it over the years and most recently having seen the Netflix version which butchers the plot and fails to understand the anti war sentiment of the original.
This version is well read and the book itself is, as it always was, a damning indictment on war. The whole point of the book which is missed in the recent film is the banality of young men enthused by old men into going to war and the subsequent inability of both the old and the young to deal with the reality of it. In the film Paul dies in an absurd attack launched on the 11th November 2018 by a deranged, shaven headed Prussian general. In the book Paul dies on a day when there is so little going on that the official communique is, "All Quiet on the Western Front."
This is a powerful, absorbing book which was written by one who was there and the Nazis burned it - all good reasons for giving it a listen!

A classic about World War One

A timeless classic about the experience of the horrors which was WW1 seen through the eyes of a German infantry man. Not a conscript joined straight out of school.

Young men on both sides killed and the aftermath.....

Well narrated ... a real horror story.
