Summary

What if you could go back in time and change the course of history? What if the watershed moment you could change was the JFK assassination? 11.22.63, the date that Kennedy was shot - unless....

King takes his protagonist Jake Epping, a high school English teacher from Lisbon Falls, Maine, 2011, on a fascinating journey back to 1958 - from a world of mobile phones and iPods to a new world of Elvis and JFK, of Plymouth Fury cars and Lindy Hopping, of a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and a beautiful high school librarian named Sadie Dunhill, who becomes the love of Jake's life - a life that transgresses all the normal rules of time.

With extraordinary imaginative power, King weaves the social, political and popular culture of his baby-boom American generation into a devastating exercise in escalating suspense.

Critic reviews

“This new epic from Stephen King rates among the best he’s written – no small praise for the man who wrote Carrie, It, The Stand and Under the Dome.” ( Trucking News)

Wonderful story telling

I did love this but was conscious that you have to be a Stephen King fan to be able to relax into it, he takes his time! I rejoiced in his love of language, his characters and his intricate plotting, a delight.

11.22.63 Review by John Moore, audible reader

Stephen King adds a comment at the end of this book that he originally wanted to write this back in 1974 but is glad he waited. I absolutely agree. Back in 1974 he was at the start of his writing career, with lots of promise but still raw - now he's like the smooth purring engine of a classic car that's been tuned to perfection. This is in my view the best of all his works - totally gripping as a suspenseful thriller, plus characterisation of the highest quality, and as engaging a love story as it is possible to encounter.
He presents us with an intriguing question - what if it were possible to travel back nearly 50 years to prevent a terrible event taking place. And more than this - what if you could change the past and crucially what implications might it have for the future not just of the main characters in the story, but for humankind as a whole? The "problem" for the writer is persuade the reader/listener to accept the impossibility and keep us reading/listening, and King more than meets the challenge. Once we get over that hurdle we're hooked. He also cleverly (tho briefly) links in characters from an old 1986 novel, IT which is like saying hi to old friends.
Craig Wasson's reading, with his range of voices (including one reminiscent of the late John Houseman) adds hugely to this work. I give it 5 stars - I'd give it 10 but only 5 are allowed!
I doubt that anyone listening to this will easily forget it. Enjoy!!

Another great listen

Really enjoyed the story even though to a point the end was predictable. I just love the stories SK dreams up and I love the way he tells them. The narration was superb!

Brilliant!

I never liked Stephen King, but after his Under the Dome, I was hooked and decided to give this book a go as well, though I had doubts about the plot, thinking, what can one squeeze out of time travel. But this book is different from any other I've read on the topic. I was so disappointed when it was finished because I didn't want it to end! Usually I listen to the books while at work to make the time go faster, but this one I listened to on the way home as well and at home straight through, even doing my usual chores. I just couldn't put it aside. Absolutely brilliant, gripping, detailed character development, quite often emotional, with an excellently developed plot, and very well read! Doing a second round now.

Fab Fab Fab

Can't think of anything bad about this book. Stephen King at his usual best. Yes it was long but I like that, more value for money! This book became a companion and I was sad when it ended. I loved the main character Jake. I loved the idea of time travel. I loved the way the story unfolded beyond the main event. I loved the love story. I loved the 'time of ago'. The narrator was great, creating both emotion and disbelief, I think I even heard tears. I highly recommend this book.

If you could, would you?

A recently divorced high school teacher is given the opportunity to travel back in time, on the promise that he'll help stop Lee Harvey Oswald assassinating JFK. We follow him on his travels and discover the ramifications of messing with time. We also meet a few of the characters of It which was a nice wee twist.

Stephen King at his Best

One of my first books from Audible was Lisey's Story by Stephen King. I took me to a totally different world that was so graphic, real and so full of all that is to be human, it has stayed with me until now. I still want to find a Yum Yum tree and sit under it!

11.22.63 does exactly the same thing. The book can take a bit of staying with because King really draws pictures with his words and it can take some time to see it fully. For me though, it's another guilty pleasure that transported me back in time. I could almost feel the sun on my face and the soft breeze of a mellow autumn. The characters are beautifully drawn with such an insight into what it is to be human. The whole concept is handled very well with an ending that was so sad and yet so right. If you are a fan of Stephen Kings' more "mature" works, then I hope you will love this as much as I did. I too wanted to stay right where I was. Coming back to daily life was a wrench!

Thoroughly enjoyable and thought provoking story.

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The basic premise of going back in time to change history - and in particular such a momentous event in history as the assassination of JFK - was extremely appealing, but what Stephen King does brilliantly in my view is make you think about the consequences of doing that. What seems at first to be a change for the better can lead to unforeseen results - the phrase “be careful what you wish for” certainly sprang to mind more than once. I would thoroughly recommend this book

Like going back in time with an edge of horror :)

I really enjoyed the depiction of 1950s and 1960s America in this book as it made me feel like i was really there :) Also the characters and story were great. The little aside with the children from IT was lovely. The only issue i had and the reason i give it four stars on story was i found the ending to be what i expected. That taken into account the ending it was the only moment lacking moxie for me. :)
