Ever since he can remember, Dom Joly has been fascinated by travel to odd places. In part this stems from a childhood spent in war-torn Lebanon, where instead of swapping marbles in the schoolyard, he had a shrapnel collection -- the schoolboy currency of Beirut. These early experiences left Dom with a profound loathing for the sanitized experiences of the modern-day travel industry and a taste for the darkest of places.

I knew of Mr Joly from the telly back in the day... so i decided to read the dark tourist, its not something i would normally go for but was on holiday and listened to it on the plane. i was really surprised by the book, dom has a specific sense of humour, very dry, but entertaining. on the whole i enjoyed the book and was surprised that i found it entertaining and quite gripping, especially loved the whole theme of dark tourism as i had neve heard of it before. who knew that you can blow up a cow for 50 USD with an RPG ?. classic stuff.

On May 2, 2011, at 1:03 a.m. in Pakistan, a satellite uplink was sent from the town of Abbottabad, crackling into the situation room of the White House in Washington, D.C.: "Geronimo, Echo, KIA." These words, spoken by a Navy SEAL, put paid to Osama bin Laden's three-decade-long career of terror.

i did a bit of research on this through amazon before using a credit and am very happy with the purchase. there is a lot of history of the events running up to the actual operation that killed bin laden, which i found very interesting. everything from the conception and historic missions of the SEAL's to the history of bin laden himself. didn't give it 5 stars becuase there was a lot of discussion about the events of the russian army in afghanistan in the 70's that i did not think was relevant. the seal training mentioned in the book is very interesting and the narration is excellent.

It is the most famous military installation in the world. And no credible insider has ever divulged the truth about his time inside of it. Until now. This is the first book based on interviews with scientists, pilots, and engineers - 58 in total - who provide an unprecedented look into the mysterious activities of a top-secret base, from the Cold War to today. With a jaw-dropping ending, it proves that facts are often more fantastic than fiction, especially when the distinction is almost impossible to make.

I really enjoyed this book, i have always been interested in Area 51 and the aircraft tested there in the 60's and 70's. the book is well narrated by the author and manages to engage the listener for long periods of time. this is probably the most complete history of the base i have ever read. it contains everything from its conception to the U2 program, Oxcart (SR-71) and bob lazar. also discusses the roswell crash up to current events. best use of a credit so far. if you have any interest in the base or CIA, cold war etc then you should enjoy this.

now i know that this book is incredibly successful and has been made in to a film as a result of this, HOWEVER the book is soooo painful to read, dont get me wrong the narration is nice and fitting tothe context but there is so much detail, i think early on the narrator is talking about the main character reading a newspaper and proceeds for the next 10 to 15 minutes discussing in great detail the storys in the paper. i found this so boring but persevered as i though it would get better, it didn't. waste of a token.

    Story

i agree with other reviewers in that the story is slow at start, but once it gets going the book is a decent read, the only downside if the narration, it is soooooo annoying and the narrator sounds exactly like Troy McClure from the simpsons tv cartoon. check out the sample and decide yourself. i will try other titles by the author but will avoid the narrator in future.

i had to laugh out to myself in one of the earlier chapters as the narrator makes several mistakes in dialogue and has to restart the paragrah. at one point he says "oh sorry about that" and starts all over again, the quality control is a bit questionable. not a bad book though.
