Boring book with one message - if you think you can or can't do something you are usually right. Don't know how it got to be on the best seller list.

Determined to fight back, Hector draws together a team of his most loyal friends from his former life in Cross Bow Security, a company originally contracted to protect his beloved wife, Hazel Bannock, and her company, the Bannock Oil Corp. They travel to the remotest Middle East, to hunt down those who pursue him and his loved ones.

What disappointed you about Vicious Circle?

Pretty abhorrent material about child abuse and rape. No real need for this material. There was none of the historical or geographical context of previous novels. This made the novel lack depth.

What could Wilbur Smith have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Take out the child abuse bits. .

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

    Narrator was ok

What character would you cut from Vicious Circle?

    Nil

What qualities do you need to become a good leader? Jonathan Perks has had 30 years of leadership experience at all levels, in the British Army and global business. He combines this with wide research and has identified eight qualities that are evident in all successful leaders. The message of hope in this book is that the inspiring leadership qualities that Jonathan describes can be developed by almost anyone. Using the author's compass model, you will be able to identify your own "true north".

    oliver says: "Oliver Johnston"
    "brilliant"
    Overall

One of the best books I have read for a while. I previously thought leadership was something you had or you hadn't. The compass model explains leadership very well and explains how you might learn or teach leadership.

Listen to this book and send your nonverbal intelligence soaring. Joe Navarro, a former FBI counterintelligence officer and a recognized expert on nonverbal behavior, explains how to "speed-read" people: decode sentiments and behaviors, avoid hidden pitfalls, and look for deceptive behaviors. You'll also learn how your body language can influence what your boss, family, friends, and strangers think of you.

    Alistair says: "Excellent"
    "Excellent"

I thought this might struggle as an audio book but it does work. There is a lot about the reasons behind body language which enabled the author to clump body language in to bite sized chunks to make it digestable.

Probably not the right book for me but a bit slow and there wasn't enough interest generated to keep me listening.

  • Carte Blanche: The New James Bond Novel

    Story
    (98)

Fresh from Afghanistan, James Bond has been recruited to a new agency. It operates independent of Five, Six and the MoD, with its very existence deniable. Its aim: to protect the Realm, by any means necessary. The Night Action alert calls Bond from dinner with a beautiful woman. GCHQ has decrypted an electronic whisper about an attack scheduled for later in the week. And 007 has been given carte blanche to do whatever it takes to fulfil his mission.

Clifford says: "A new premium Bond"
    "Fantastic effort"
    Overall

Jeffrey Deaver is just the person to write the new bond book. He can intertwine several different facets of a plot and bring them together at the end to a nail biting conclusion. He brought Bond into the 21st century and made him believable. Great book I hope he writes another.

The Accidental Billionaires is the inspiration behind the Oscar winning film, The Social Network, dramatising Zuckerberg's success and proving you don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies... Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg - an awkward maths prodigy and a painfully shy computer genius - were never going to fit in at elite, polished Harvard. Yet that all changed when master-hacker Mark crashed the university's entire computer system by creating a rateable database of female students.

    Paul says: "A good read"
    "Better than the movie"
    Overall

Great insight in to the foundation of facebook. I found the book much better than the movie.

He hosts his own BAFTA nominated BBC1 series, Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow, and won the British Comedy Award for Best Live Stand-up in 2009 following his record breaking 54-date Arena tour.

Unbelievably funny book. Would thoroughly recommend it. I think more enjoyable to listen to than read as you benefit from McIntyre's funny delivery of the story.

  • Cheating Death: The Doctors and Medical Miracles that Are Saving Lives Against All Odds

In this riveting book, Dr. Sanjay Gupta - neurosurgeon, chief medical correspondent for CNN, and best-selling author- chronicles the almost unbelievable science that has made these seemingly miraculous recoveries possible. A bold new breed of doctors has achieved amazing rescues by refusing to accept that any life is irretrievably lost. Extended cardiac arrest, "brain death," not breathing for over an hour-all these conditions used to be considered inevitably fatal, but they no longer are.

    Alistair says: "Didn't finish it"
    "Didn't finish it"
    Overall

I have a particular interest in this sort of thing and sadly there wasn't enough interest generated by the text to keep me listening and I gave up. I suspect this book might be better if abridged. Don't bother.
