A rip roaring ride through 17th century France with four dashing heros and a motley crew of villians!
Well recorded, and excellently read by Micheal Page.
A classic adventure tale with plenty of plot twists-not always with the outcome you might expect!
    Highly recommended.

  • At Home: A Short History of Private Life

Bill Bryson was struck one day by the thought that we devote more time to studying the battles and wars of history than to considering what history really consists of: centuries of people quietly going about their daily business. This inspired him to start a journey around his own house, an old rectory in Norfolk, considering how the ordinary things in life came to be.

Stewart Webb says: "More Fact Pact Bryson"

Mr Bryson has done it again! A thoughly enjoyable listen.
Read by the man himself with his subtly anglicized American accent.
A thought provoking romp through history with just a touch of wit and plenty of wisdom!
Very entertaining to anyone who has an interest in the history of the more everyday things in life. Only one critisism - I do wish Americans could pronounce words correctly!

Shortlisted for the Audiobook Download of the Year, 2007.
A History of Modern Britain confronts head-on the victory of shopping over politics. It tells the story of how the great political visions of New Jerusalem or a second Elizabethan Age - rival idealisms - came to be defeated by a culture of consumerism, celebrity, and self-gratification. In each decade, political leaders have thought they knew what they were doing, but found themselves confounded. Every time, the British people turn out to be stroppier and harder to herd than predicted.

Francis says: "A History of Modern British Politicians..."
"Mr Marr really has come up trumps."

On the surface the subject matter may seem dry and boring and I'm sure in the wrong hands it definately could be.
However, Andrew Marr lends this book his own indomitable flair and passion. His unbiased narrative is both informative and interesting. The whole book reads like an epic screenplay across the century.
Andrew Marr really is a natural and I highly recommend his book.
If you are in two minds about this book I urge you to give it a go - you won't be disappointed!

Set in the Parisian underworld and plotted like a detective story, Les Miserables follows Jean Valjean, originally an honest peasant, who has been imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving family. A hardened criminal upon his release, he eventually reforms, becoming a successful industrialist and town mayor. Despite this, he is haunted by an impulsive former crime and is pursued relentlessly by the police inspector Javert.

This audiobook is very long - but not at all tedious!
The narratrive is fast paced, well read and a pleasure to listen to.
This epic page turner really did have me enthralled and rooting for the antihero of this classic tale.
    Highly recommended!

On the 75th anniversary of its publication, this outstanding work of literature is more crucial and relevant today than ever before. Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A. F. (After Ford, the deity).
