"Good to have Rebus back"
The newly retired Rebus is as sharp and flawed as ever. I have enjoyed the Complaints duo but this is more like Rankin of old.
"Brilliant"
I was a Rebus fan and very sad when he 'retired'. I struggled with some of Ian Rankin's other works but was relieved when the 'Complaints' appeared and I found something I could again enjoy. This one combines the two brilliantly and gave me some very mixed loyalties. This is certainly a book that will be listened to over and over as I am sure I missed some subtleties the first time through.
"Great to have Rebus back - and so good!"
We listed to this on the way from Aberdeen to Mull on holiday and back in March - a good intelligent Scottish listen. I do really like Scottish authors and Rankin is always a reliable read or listen. The return of Rebus in his new guise was even better than his earlier appearances in my mind. Being about the same age as Rebus is here, being at Uni in Edinburgh and knowing the places in the book, I am just almost too comfortable! But - that will not stop me from listening to the new Rebus novels as they come out. Keep up the great new work Mr Rankin! This is a listen that my wife and I can agree on and enjoy and discuss.
"Not the best from Ian Rankin"
As a fan of inspector Rebus I love these books by Ian Rankin but this is not the best. Pleasant to listen to if you are a Rebus and Rankin fan but not the best story line this time
"Rankin at his best!"
Once again Rebus is on the trail of a serial killer. Young girls have gone missing over a number of years. He has been removed from his "pre-retirement" job on cold cases, and soon find that some murders link to just these cases.
The haunting "in another man's shoes" is evident throughout and it sums up Rebus' mood. Long journey's on the same motorway lead hi m , at last, to the killer.
Rebus is dour but a brilliant detective, please Ian, don't retire him yet!
"Good choice for my first audible book"
This was the first time I have had a talking book, I have read Rebus books before but never listened to one. The storyline was excellent, up to Ian Rankin's usual standard and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I particularly enjoyed the differences that were highlighted between modern policing and the old school style employed by Rebus
"Another great Rebus story"
I really enjoyed this, the characters come to life and feel like real people you'd want to meet (well maybe not all of them). It makes me want to visit the area too which sounds lovely. I was slightly disappointed with the conclusion. It felt a bit brief after the build up, but I'm the sort of person that likes loose ends all tidied away rather that being left wondering about some of the details. This story also brings in Malcolm Fox (Complaints) face to face with Rebus which really highlighted their differences. A good read/listen and hope there. Will be more Rebus to come.
"How does he get away with it?"
I love seeing how Rebus' mind works and how he gets his killer in end. Joining the dots between all the murders and those that aren't truly murders is his speciality. His quirky relationships with friends, for and family are also back in this one, making you physically shake your head with frustration at him at times. A great story with a tender plot that sees Rebus cover a lot of Scottish mileage!
"Rebus returns"
Over the years I have read all of the Ian Rankin books and have enjoyed them greatly. Being a big fan of Rebus I looked forward to his return unfortunately this story doesnt grip like the previous Rebus stories
"Brilliant for walking to"
This was a new one for me, a Rebus talking book, I have read them before but not listened to one. It was excellent, up to Ian Rankin's usual standard and easy to follow. I listen while I go for long walks and I have lost the thread on some things I have tried but this was really good.
