"enthralling and brilliant"
Marvelous book brilliantly read on Audible.
Exquisite descriptions, superb use of language .
Totally absorbing
"Irresistible"
I enjoyed Bring up the Bodies even more than Wolf Hall. The style is easier and is so well read that I could not resist listening when I should have been doing other things! The pace of reading was good and the different voices for each character. The plot is complicated if you do not know the history of this period but HIlary Mantel makes it come alive and you are a fly on the wall.
This was my first book on my MP3 player - formerly I used CDs - but now I am hooked and have subsequently bought far more audio books than I expected.
"Interesting and addictive."
An excellent book. Even although you generally know the outcome as the history is well known. The Author makes all the characters feel real, and you can sympathise with each of the characters and the choices that they have to make in the various scenarios and situations they find themselves in. The period was brought to life and the politics and society norms explained so that you could understand the decisions that the various characters made.
"Superb research and writing"
Hilary Mantel writes another meticulous and interesting historical novel, and it's easy to see why she wins prizes. It was a very good listen, but I think to get the full value of her writing it would be better to actually read the book myself. The need to refer back occurred often and listening on an i-Pod makes that difficult. I have no regrets about purchasing the audiobook, but I think I need to buy the book as well.
"dull"
I've read and listened to many books about historical figures but this was painfully dull. I haven't even listened to it all as it make me feel sleepy so I can't focus on it.
"disappointed"
I really couldn't get into this book, the story was so slow and turgid that I had to give up on my listening after 2 hours, quite rare for me. Disappointed as I expected something special after all the praise others have given it. The title sounds as if it should be full of action, it isn't!
"Bring up the YAWWNN"
A long winded and ponderous novel about the well known and much reviewed life and times of Henry 8th and his wives. Boring, boring, and more boring.even the narrator got on my nerves as his voice sounded the same for all the characters so that I found it hard to differentiate between them. The squeaky voice he attributed to the "King" was nothing like that which was historically recorded as "booming and commanding".
Sorry Ms.Mantell, I dont think I will bother reading anything of your works again
"Superb"
I downloaded both wolf hall and bring up the bodies and listened back to back. I agree with the review that said it felt like you were eavesdropping on conversations. It really brought that whole period to life. I may be in the minority but I preferred Simon Vance's voice for Cromwell and his general narration voices to that the narrator of Wolf Hall.
"Simply marvellous"
I read Wolf Hall in paperback and bought the audio version of Bring Up the Bodies. Both are compelling and beautiful but somwhow the audio version brought the atmosphere alive for me. I revel in the complexity of Cromwell's thoughts - humane, even compassionate, but utterly ruthless - as imagined by the author.
Hliary Mantel deserves every plaudit and award she gets and a whole lot more. I can't wait for the final book
"Tour de force!"
This book is a joy - the sort of book you know you will be listening to again and again for a very long time. Very unusual to begin with, and it took me a little time to find its pace, but once I did it was a revelation. And isn't it nice to find something that actually lives up to its hype! I notice that one or two reviews found the narrator of Wolf Hall better than Simon Vance: I thought they were both brilliant but the latter made the voices (particularly Henry's voice) much more quickly identifiable and I think this must help the listener considerably. I hope the third book, when it comes out, is as memorable as its predecessors.
