"Worldwide phenomenon causing book!"
I normally listen to an audiobook when walking home after work. Any other book would be stopped as I was approaching my front door and not listened too until the next working day. This book however quite often was not stopped as it was really quite addictive. I would even find excuses as to why i needed to listen to some more. Yes it's girly, caused a Worldwide phenomen and not necessarily had great reviews but it is a lot of fun of which I (and especially my fiancé) would recommend ;o)
"hype over substance maybe?"
Fifty shades of grey and the subsequent two books in there series were an interesting glimpse into the world of domination and submission. The genre of erotic romance is an interesting one and I did enjoy the story up to a point. The flow of the story I thought was good. But the insistent passive voice of the female lead was very irritating. The “Crap” and “Holy crap” was used every few lines and the references to the inner goddess was frankly annoying. That said the story bumbled along and when compared to some of the other erotic romance on the market it stacked up well.
The hype of the book for me was in the sex scenes, the reputation of the book is how salacious it is, for my taste it was a little lame, maybe the publisher watered it down to suit a more main stream market? I really don’t know. There was a scene at the end of the first book where Christian beat the female character. It just didn’t ring true, too uncontrolled, and really not consistent with a dom/sub relationship, in my opinion.
Overall not a bad read and I did enjoy it for the most part, but for this genre I prefer the books of Black Velvet Seductions.
"disappointing after all the hype"
i was looking forward to this book but it wasnt that good. didnt mind the crude words but very repetitive. the story wasnt very strong. the reading didnt give any sense of excitment.
"Brilliant trilogy"
Gutted when I had finished the last book, loved being caught up in the life of Christian and Ana. A touching story with hidden depths.
"A come-again read. "
Dear reader, I truly thought I would have absolutely no interest in this tale of sex and debauchery, but being a woman in her prime and not being afraid of such topics nor embarrassed by them, I was kind of left wondering when it would all kick in! if you listened to all the hype regarding this novel many would be in fear of being caught reading it, which is why I suspect it has been such a massive audio hit. However..... Once I had completed the first two chapters of the book, I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next. I was engrossed in the general content and although the sex within is highly demographic it is most certainly NOT the entirety. Much like a marriage really. Would I recommend it? Yes, but NOT for the reason you would first assume. The story within and surrounding the characters is indeed engorssing in itself. It is for this reason I give the book 4 stars. I did indeed find myself re-listening to the whole novel once more. A very enjoyable read, but please do listen to the story within and pay heed to the sexual encounters within their correct tense to gain the most from this novel. Truly - Indie.
"Fifty Shades Grey"
Very well written and good at keeping the reader wanting to read on and on.
"Entertaining book with food for thought"
Becca Battoe makes this a very entertaining book on audible, her character comes through really well, so well done to her. The book although racy and sexy, leaves food for thought, exploring the vulnerablilty of both main characters and the impact of their relationship on the rest of the cast.It certainly leaves you wanting to continue through the trilogy especially to find out more about the reasons behind the personality and characteristics of Christian Grey. Well written and enjoyable.
"Making my own mind up"
After reading mixed reviews I nearly chose not to download this as "don't waste your credit" appeared on the reviews. However being the hot book of the time I decided to download it. Audible after all allow exchange within a given time frame if you don't like it! I kept it and am now on the second book of the trilogy_it's not just about sex, there is a good story line. I have found it addictive listening, and yes thought provoking. The narrative was not irritating as mentioned, I used the speed setting 1.25 and found this good. My advice if you are thinking about this but not sure - give it a go, listen once you have the download and exchange it if not to your taste !
"e mails"
Books are increasingly including e mails in the text. Those who make the decisions in these matters HAVE to find a way to improve the narration in this area - but then do "the people who make the decisions in these matters" ever read these reviews? The e mail exchanges almost drove me mad at times and made me wish I had bought the printed version so that I could skip the "to" "from" "time" etc. Unlike other reviewers I did not find this book that bad, many I think had bought it because of the graphic sexual content and were therefore tuned or prepared to be shocked and disgusted - as they thought "nice decent people" ought to be. However take out the sexual aspect and there is underneath everything a pretty good story.
"Hyped up too much"
Got this just because of all the hype and didn't feel I wanted to miss out on anything but I wouldn't have done really. At least I can join in any conversations about it but a very weak story just spiced up with sex. I borrowed the last two books from someone at work and like everyone else in the office I was able to speed read and skim through. All in all got it got very boring. It was a bit Mills and Boon with sex. Not for me at all. It could have been condensed into one book. Can't imagine I will read another from this author and can't really recommend it.
