"A lovely story and an easy listen"
This story is a delight. Completely captivating, I walked each step with Harold! Also, having Jim Broadbent narrating increased my enjoyment. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an unlikely hero. Harold's acceptance of the hangers-on who joined him on his walk and who tried to steal his glory, was something most people would have found difficult. His quiet manner hid his inner agony but his determination to keep walking should be a lesson to all. With some very funny moments, this book will capture your heart.
"A pilgrimage worth taking"
One of the best books I've read all year.
A very gentle start, travelling with Harold up through Britain, through places I know. The middle section, when the press etc. get involved shows all too well the hangers-on who crave their 15 minutes of fame, and with no real care as to how it affects other people. The ending ( once you have got over what seems a short, rather unlikely, distraction of Harold getting lost - both mentally and physically) had me in tears, so sad.
All in all, highly recommended, and a book I'll listen to again and again..
"Very good story."
Jim Broadbent reads this story so well to me he IS Harold. This tale starts as a picture of mundane life and quickly changes into something quite different. It is a philosophical story of a families life and the saddness of miscommunication. Also the importance of making the most of your life and every moment. Life isnt a rehearsal- type-thing. So glad I bought this. Quite moving and very well written. Go for it!
"Great narration and a moving story"
I thouroughly enjoyed this book. There are some books which I think are enhanced by the qulaity of the narration and this is one of them Jim Broadbent is thoroughly convincing.
The events of the story are perhaps ulikley, but the storytelling is convincing. We are all leadng lives of quiet desparation but this is essentailly a story of hope and redemption, it is in parts very moving as Harold's personal journey in coming to terms with his past is mirrored through the actual journey that he takes.
"A heart warming and lovely story to listen to."
Although this story is very slow paced, it works. It is a very touching storyline and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The narrator is fantastic in this audio book, although famous and you instantly recognise his voice, you forget that very quickly and he becomes Harold Fry. Which shows just how good he is and reading the character. Would definitely recommend.
"total enjoyment"
Came across this book by accident. Since then i have recommended it to everyone i know who reads. I love the authors descriptive writing. Creates a great picture especially as an audio book. I love how the characters very quickly become people you feel you know really well, and really care where the story goes. A brilliant book, i felt very sad when i had finished. Come on Rachel joyce another book please.
"disappointing"
This had rave reviews but I found it over- sentimental. This sort of thing was done much much better in "The 100 year old man who jumped out of the window", which was so excellent that I listened to it twice! I found Harold Fry a bit contrived and soppy. Others have loved it so perhaps I am in the minority.
"Engulfing and Mesmorising"
Jim Broadbent has a wonderful voice for narration.
This is a lovely story, of a man making a spur of the moment decision to do something incredible for someone who did something amazing for him many years ago.
You walk with Harold, you meet the strangers who help him, you see the beauty around him, you feel the cold, the rain, the sun, as each in turn beat down on him and change him. The story is courageous and heartwarming and not without its very sad times, when I cried and felt overwhelmed with his sadness and loss.
You must listen to this, it's just wonderful.
"A long trudge through emotional writing"
It's not the book's fault. It's mine. I don't like very emotional writing. Lots of descriptions of sadness welling up. Words unspoken. The endless torment of sad people.
That said, it wasn't a bad book. It starts well, and in the first few chapters you wonder if it might be a classic. Alas it isn't. Many of the other characters are just convenient props for ideas. And some of the actual things that happen are unbelievable, not in a fantastic way, just in an unlikely, impractical way.
"Heart warming"
I loved this book, beautifully read and just charming. Well worth a listen and not my usual read.
