"One of the best yet!"
This book is so good I couldn't stop listening! After hearing both parts of The Name of the Wind I couldn't wait a month for my next credits so have bought The Wise Man's Fear - I can't wait to leave the office and pick up the story again! Brilliantly read, and wonderful book!
"The best Audiobook I've encountered to date"
I bought this on a whim, based on random clicking and customer reviews.
I like fantasy, but am very picky and intolerant of much of the genre, which often fails to make me suspend my disbelief and hides poorly drawn characters and trite contrivances behind clichéd spectacle and sensation.
The above criticisms cannot be levied at The Name of the Wind. It's a remarkable tale!
For a start, the first part of the book is given over purely to character introduction before the story proper begins. By that time we're intrigued about everyone, and care about them too. The adventure that ultimately unwinds is epic in scale, but also very grounded and human. Yes, there's lots of magic at play, but even there, we're kept rooted to the plausible, as the magic available to our characters is functional and utilitarian. The wild stuff only happens in their myths, legends and folklore.
Despite the size of the story, not a word, episode or event is redundant. This is a book without padding.
And then we come to the recording itself. Bear in mind that this is a word-for-word reading of the text. It's delivered by only one narrator - Rupert Degas. Still, the whole thing carries the weight and vibrance of a dramatisation rather than a simple reading. So much care has gone into giving each character their own voice and their own personalities, and the book's first-person narration is delivered with all the barbs, sorrow and wry comedy needed to make listening an intense experience.
I cannot rate this audiobook highly enough!
"OK but not worth 2 credits for the whole book."
I purchased part one of this book on the strength of the reviews after having gone through the whole of Joe Abercrombies back catalogue. This book has a strong plot, but this whole book feels like an overlong introduction to the story. At several points I did feel like this was aimed at teenage boys as a Twilight antidote. The basis of the first part of the story is a highly intelligent boy strives against all adversity (most of it self inflicted) and suceeds. If the main character of the story was female I am sure this would be verging on chick lit. Bar the already mentioned Mr Abercrombie you have got the excellent Mistborn series, both of which I would say are better than this.
At the end of part 1 I was rather indifferent to the fates of the main characters. By the end of part 2 my view had been consolidated. Will read the rest of the saga, but will read the books from my local library and keep a credit for Red Country when it is released.
As an aside, any book that is split to cost more that one credit is poor value, please listen Audible x
"Completely engrossing"
Absolutely loved this book - I couldn't stop listening. Rupert Degas is one of the best narrators I have listened to, he was absolutely fantastic. If you liked novels like Robin Hobb's Shadowmarch or Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Trilogy you'll enjoy this book. Have just finished the second book, can't wait for the next installment.
"the best audio book i have"
this was the best audiobook i have listened to so far, great story, lovely details and you just don't want it to end. cant wait to get listening to the next one. please give it a go if your unsure because it so good.
"Utterly Brilliant"
If you love you fantasy as a big, bold all encompassing world The Name of the Wind is right up your street. It is a fantastically written piece of work, that is also darkly funny. The audio book just builds on this with Rupert Degas who holds the storyline through a range of voices and characters. I love this book.
"Outstanding"
Patrick Rothfuss has created not just a book, but a world! If you like stories, you will love this! There are many many stories within this... story!
The narration by Rupert Degas is the best narration i have ever heard. So consistent with so many characters making it easy to follow.
Can't wait for my monthly membership to come around to buy part 2! :)
"A Beutifully writen book."
A Beautifully written book.
I was really surprised by this book. The story is so bitter sweet, and each scene change builds your enthusiasm for the characters. I really like how the main character spirit shines through, even when his experiences are dark and his emotions are twisted.
This is a great long story, very entertaining and the narrator is fantastic.
Book 2 matures and gets more dangeriuos, darker and sensual....
"Sublime"
Masterfully written and masterfully narrated. One forgets the length of it as one gets so anthralled with the story. Quite bewitching. So eventful, it could easily make more than one good book.
"Excellent"
BUY IT, you will not regret it. This is a top notch listen. The story will carry you along and you will not want it to end.
