  • "a wonderful new world"

    Overall

I sometimes enjoy fiction for children more than adult fiction, and this is certainly a marvellous example. Having failed to become immersed in Terry Pratchett's Discworld, which is just too clever for its own good, I was a bit apprehensive about another new fantasy world, but this book is a gem. I can't quite work out what makes it so different, except perhaps Andrew Peterson's use of words. I was not surprised to find out that he is a song writer.

The Iggiby family (that's the only problem with audio books - you can't see how things are spelled!) are brave and funny and adventurous, there is just the right amount of fear and excitement, and although I guessed one of the mysteries before the end, there is still plenty to look forward to in the next book. The other characters and creatures are beautifully illustrated, and the whole world feels real and believable. And special mention for the excellent Pete the Sockman, and the lovely voice of the narrator Peter Sandon.

The series is specifically designed for those who are unfamiliar with Buddhism and delivered in plain language aimed at a western audience. In the past, it would have cost you several thousand dollars to get onboard and attend these lectures, but now they are available for the first time to the general public. Presented in a fun manner by Marshall Stern, it mixes profound lessons with a very light touch.

Timothy Phillips is a 19-year-old Christian young adult who loves to sing in church. One day, he's discovered by the producer of a national talent show. Timothy goes on the show, performs country music instead of the Christian Southern Gospel he prefers, and ends up winning his portion of the show. As he encounters increasing hostility towards Christians, he begins to follow the world instead of Christ. The story follows his highs and lows as he becomes a famous country musician shortly before the end times.
