Stephen King's books adapt really well to audio. I love the conversational style of his writing and unlike with a book, you have to go at the narrator's pace - no skipping ahead or skimming - and so you really get to appreciate the build up of tension and the twists and turns of the story. This is, in my view, one of King's best books, a genuinely excellent novel with a terrific story, great and very convincing atmosphere and a well drawn cast of three dimensional characters.

Frank Muller narrates the book brilliantly. He has a fantastic sense of pace and timing; distinguishes the characters superbly and he captures Stephen King's conversational style just right.

Strongly recommended - a real five star listen.

At Cold Mountain Penitentiary, along the lonely stretch of cells known as the Green Mile, killers such as "Billy the Kid" Wharton and the possessed Eduard Delacroix await death strapped in "Old Sparky". Guards as decent as Paul Edgecombe and as sadistic as Percy Wetmore watch over them.

This is not the sort of book I would normally read, but it was going for a song in the Audible summer sale, so I thought I'ld give it a whirl.

I'm glad I did so. It is an engaging and bittertsweet story, and with the book comprising as it does largely of dialogue or inner monologue, it is perfectly suited for audio. And the narration is just superb - beautifully paced and with the characters brought brilliantly to life. In fact it is for me one of those books that works far better as audio than reading for yourself.

    Story

Another first class thriller from Michael Connelly, though the main character this time is not Harry Bosch who figues in so many of his excellent books.

This is a legal thriller, rather than police procedural, with a new lead character Micky Halleck who is drawn in much the same way as HB - complicated, likeable but far from perfect. The plot is intricately constructed, with the author striking a good balance between setting the factual background, as you have to in this type of thriller, and getting on with the story; there are plenty of plausible twists and turns to rack up the tension and keep you hooked; and the book is very well written. Narration is very good, expertly paced with the characters well drawn, and sound quality is first class. Strongly recommended.

If you do buy and enjoy this book, you might note that Michael Connelly has written another thriller featuring Micky Halleck - "Brass Verdict" which is also available on Audible. I shall be getting this next month.

Among radio comedy's most enduring features were its running gags - and few gags ran longer, or more hilariously, than the legendary feud between two of its great masters: Jack Benny and Fred Allen. For nearly 20 years the mere mention of Benny on an Allen program was guaranteed to produce an escalating laugh - just as bringing Allen up with Benny had listener in stitches at the mere anticipation of a response. This collection brings together the classic episodes that started it all, to the showdown that was supposed to end it once and for all.
