I’ve read reviews of the Michel Thomas French Vocabulary course and feel that if I hadn’t purchased the course from Audible before reading the reviews I might have been dissuaded from using this excellent product. I think the naysayers miss the point somewhat when they condemn its format. I happen to think it is an extremely well thought out format which is invested with an immense amount of expertise.
Having run through the Michel Thomas French Beginner, Advanced, Advanced Review and Language Builder courses at least three times apiece over a 9-month period, I knew I still had a long way to go if I was to speak as an adult using long sentences in French. I've now been through the Vocabulary course three times in five months and am constantly learning more and more from this excellent course. Why do I think it is excellent? Well, I started watching 'Plus Belle A Vie' on TV5 some six months ago and was dismayed at not being able to pick up more than the odd word. I determined that I probably would never be able to understand real spoken French until the entire French-speaking world spoke very, very slowly.
Using the Vocabulary course has introduced me not only to a much wider vocabulary but also guided me as I tuned my ear to native spoken French. I now understand around 60-70% of the content of this French 'Serie' - sometimes I understand 90%-100% of a conversation. So, either I've improved, using the Vocabulary course, or the French-speaking world has acceded to my desire and begun to speak slower.
This is a 6.5 hour course and will take you at least three times that to run through it once. I use it for up to 2 hours per day and am in the middle of my fourth run through.
My next step is to work on 'idiomatic' French. Perhaps Michel Thomas Method can provide a separate course to augment the bits they use in the other courses?
If you want a big nudge towards fluency in spoken French, after using the other Michel Thomas courses, I recommend this product.
