A passionate but ultimately tragic love affair starts when two students - one French, one English - meet at university at the beginning of the sixties. From its tentative, unpromising early stages, the relationship develops into a life-changing one, whose profound impact continues to reverberate forty years later.

beautifully written as you would expect from Melvyn Bragg. Mark McGann is a brilliant narrator and manages to be equally convincing as an elderly genteel french woman and a working class cumbrian man. The only reason that I have not given this five stars is the subject matter, there is a vein of depression running through the story that dragged me down a little. Had I realised the nature of the story, I would probably looked for another title.
