The Tailor of Salisbury
Lindsay Fairgrieve
- Unabridged
Narrator: Martin Jarvis
Length: 2 hours and 33 min.
This is the heroic and fascinating true story of Geoffrey James Hurford, a tailor who worked and lived in Salisbury, England, right up until his death at the age of 83.
Geoffrey James Hurford was born on October 3, 1921, in Damerham, Hampshire, England, at a time when Crown Prince Hirohito, aged 20, had just been named Regent of Japan; the cinema was erupting with excitement at the arrival on screen of Italy's most glamorous star, Rudolph Valentino; and, in the United Kingdom, a 45-mile-per-gallon brand new Rover two-seater car could be bought for 230 guineas. As a child, Geoffrey contracted osteomyelitis and spent several years in hospital undergoing traumatic operations. By the time he was 21, he had finally made the decision to have his leg amputated.
The fascinating details of Geoffrey Hurford's life (childhood, tailoring college, marriage, and an extensive working career) is given a sensitive and humorous "talking head" performance by Martin Jarvis. This is the heroic and entertaining true story of a tailor who, as he approached his 81st year, carried on working from his tiny, Dickensian front room in Salisbury, England.
