It is the spring of 1809 and a small British army is stationed in Lisbon when Marshal Soult begins the French invasion of northern Portugal. I must agree with the previous reviewer. It is rare to come across a narrator as brilliant at characterisation as William Gaminara. Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series is, as most will agree, beautifully written. Gaminara brings the characters leaping off the page - his 'Harper' is particularly good. He also makes the subtle but important differences in accent; Spanish, Portuguese, and French, without descending into the trite European equivalent of 'mummerset'. Not only was it hard to turn the story off, but I find it bears listening to again and again. I shall now buy the others available by this narrator.

Ganimara captures Cornwall's words in such a way that paints events and scenes as vividly as the best old master. Bringing to life in a way that other narrators of this authors novels should aspire to, he captures all of the nuances of the different nationalities without sounding like an escapee from 'allo' allo', It proved very diffcult to switch off and more than once I sat in my car with the engine off just to hear the end of a particularly exciting part
